You arrive in the Meadows biome with nothing but your fists. Punch trees to gather Wood, then craft a Stone Axe at the Workbench to begin harvesting Flint from riverbanks and Beech logs more efficiently. Build a basic Workbench inside a roofed shelter to halt the Wet debuff that cuts your base health regen. Your first priority is a Crude Bow with Flint Arrows — it lets you kite the Greylings and Necks that patrol the area. Equip a Leather Shield and craft Leather Armor from Deer Hide to hit 8 armor before setting out to raise Eikthyr's runestone, which marks the altar location on your map. Raise the Rag Set first if leather is scarce.
After defeating Eikthyr you gain the Hard Antler, which crafts the Pickaxe — the tool required to mine Copper veins hidden throughout the Black Forest. Smelt Copper and Tin at the Smelter (fueled by Coal or Wood) to alloy Bronze at the Forge, then craft Bronze Armor, a Bronze Axe, and your first Atgeir or Mace. The Mace is critical for fighting Greydwarf Elites and Trolls, both of which are resistant to slashing and piercing but weak to blunt damage. Raid Burial Chambers for Surtling Cores needed to build the Smelter and Charcoal Kiln. Activate The Elder's runestone to locate his altar — grow Ancient Seeds by killing Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans to use as the summoning offering.
The Swamp biome requires Bronze tools to harvest — specifically the Bronze Pickaxe for opening Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts. Each crypt is locked; use the Swamp Key dropped by The Elder to enter. Inside you will find Iron Scrap which smelts into Iron, the foundation of the game's mid-tier gear set including Iron Armor, Iron Mace, and the Banded Shield. Brew Poison Resistance Mead at a Fermenter before descending: Blobs and Oozers in the swamp apply a powerful poison DoT. The Stagbreaker hammer is effective against the clustered undead in crypt corridors. Locate Bonemass's runestone and collect 10 Withered Bones (found in crypt chests) to summon him.
Freeze damage begins the moment you enter the Mountain biome without Frost Resistance Mead or Wolf Armor equipped — brew the mead using Honey, Thistle, Bloodbag, and Greydwarf Eyes before your first expedition. Mine Silver veins using an Iron Pickaxe; the veins are buried underground and require the Wishbone (dropped by Bonemass) to locate via its proximity pinging. Craft Wolf Armor at a level-2 Forge for built-in freeze resistance, making mead unnecessary. Drake Helmets can supplement armor early. Summon Moder using 3 Dragon Eggs — the eggs spawn on mountain peaks and each weighs 200 units, requiring multiple trips or a cart. Obsidian found on mountain peaks enables Frost and Poison Arrow crafting at the Workbench.
The Plains is the most dangerous open biome before the Mistlands. Fulings (goblin-like creatures) patrol in groups and hit far harder than any prior enemy — approach their villages from range using Frost or Needle Arrows, or distract with a Campfire to trigger their aggro on Lox. Defeat Fuling Berserkers for Black Metal Scraps, which smelt at the Blast Furnace (unlocked with Artisan Table from Moder's drop) into Black Metal. Craft Black Metal Shield, Atgeir, and eventually Padded Armor (from Linen Thread via Flax farming) for the game's strongest pre-Mistlands kit. Summon Yagluth using 5 Fuling Totems. Taming a Lox requires dropping Cloudberries near it repeatedly over several in-game days — tamed Lox can be ridden as mounts.
The Mistlands biome is permanently shrouded in thick fog until you place a Wisp Torch — crafted from Eitr and a Dvergr Lantern — to clear local areas. Collect Wisps at night near Wisp Fountains to craft the torches. Dvergr outposts scatter the biome and contain Black Marble, Yggdrasil Wood, and Refined Eitr reagents; taking items from Dvergr chests turns them hostile. Craft Carapace Armor from Carapace dropped by Seeker Soldiers. The Eitr-based magic system lets you cast spells like Lightning staff and Staff of Embers from a Magic stat. Seek Sap Extractors in Dvergr settlements to harvest Sap from Yggdrasil roots, a key ingredient for Eitr refinement. Summon The Queen using 3 Seeker Soldier trophies at her altar.
The Ashlands biome (added in the 2024 update) sits at the southern pole and is accessible only by boat. The entire continent is permanently under siege by Charred and Morgen enemies — build fortified outposts quickly using Stone and Black Marble to survive nights. Flametal Ore veins are scattered across the volcanic terrain and require an Iron Pickaxe to mine; smelt at the Blast Furnace for Flametal Bars used to craft Flametal Armor and the Slayer two-hander. Charred Fortresses (landmark structures) contain Embla Root and Volcanic Rock needed for advanced crafting stations. Seek the Charred Boss altars to find the new bosses tied to the Ashlands storyline. Stock up on healing Mead before venturing deep — the enemy density is significantly higher than any prior biome.
As your world expands, efficient travel between biomes becomes critical. Build a Karve (using Bronze Nails, Fine Wood, Deer Hide, and Resin) as your first ocean vessel after the Black Forest; upgrade to the Longship for larger cargo capacity when gathering Dragon Eggs on Mountain peaks or moving Flametal from Ashlands. Portals can teleport you instantly between two tagged portals but will not carry ores or ingots — plan ore runs around ship routes. Keep a Hoe and Cultivator on hotbar to flatten terrain at new camp sites and plant Barley and Flax for Plains-tier food. Hearty Lox Meat Pie, Serpent Stew, and Bread are the three top-tier stamina and health foods available before the Mistlands food system overhaul.

Eikthyr
Attack Patterns
Eikthyr is a giant stag with glowing blue antlers, summoned at the Mystical Altar in the Meadows using 2 Deer Trophies. His attacks consist of a close-range antler slam, a short forward charge, and a ranged lightning bolt that erupts from his front hooves and travels in a straight line. He periodically rears back before the lightning strike, giving a brief telegraph. His movement speed is moderate and he does not enrage at low health.
Strategy
Maintain medium range — close enough to dodge the charge but far enough to sidestep lightning bolts. Fire Arrows deal a small damage bonus and are craftable before the fight; aim for his glowing chest. When he rears for the lightning attack, sprint diagonally to either side. Block the antler slam with a Leather Shield rather than tanking it. The Eikthyr Power (unlocked after defeating him) reduces stamina drain while running and jumping, making it the default power for exploration throughout most of the game.
The Elder
Attack Patterns
The Elder is a giant vine-covered stone colossus summoned using 3 Ancient Seeds at the altar found via his runestone. His attacks include a ground-stomp vine wave that travels forward across the floor, a vine whip from his arm that covers a wide arc, and a ranged vine tendril barrage aimed at your location. He periodically spawns Root Enemies around the arena perimeter. He does not have a formal health phase transition but will prioritize his ranged attack more frequently below 50% health.
Strategy
Kite him around the stone pillars in the arena to break line of sight on the vine tendrils. Fire Arrows are his hard counter — bring at least 50 and craft more at a nearby Workbench if needed. Aim for the glowing green rune on his chest for maximum damage. His vine wave travels slowly and in a straight line; sidestep it by strafing perpendicular. The Root Enemies he spawns are distracting but low priority — reposition rather than wasting time killing them. His Swamp Key drop is mandatory to access Sunken Crypts in the Swamp.
Bonemass
Attack Patterns
Bonemass is a massive toxic blob summoned at his altar in the Swamp using 10 Withered Bones. His attacks include a toxic slap that applies the Poison debuff, a bile vomit AoE that pools on the ground, and a summon ability that spawns Skeleton and Blob minions from his body. The poison pool he vomits lingers for several seconds and overlapping pools can quickly cover the arena. His arm has a deceptively long reach and will hit you even when you think you are safely behind him.
Strategy
Drink Poison Resistance Mead before engaging — without it, the poison debuff will kill you through your Iron Armor health pool. Two-hand the Iron Mace and attack his body aggressively; slashing and piercing weapons deal roughly half the damage of blunt against him. Step aside when he winds up the bile vomit and wait for the pool to dissipate or circle around it. Ignore the skeleton and blob minions he spawns; stay focused on the boss. His Wishbone drop is essential for finding Silver veins in the Mountain biome.
Moder
Attack Patterns
Moder is a massive frost dragon summoned using 3 Dragon Eggs at her altar on a Mountain peak. She alternates between an airborne phase and a grounded phase. While airborne she fires ice bolt salvos and an ice breath beam that freezes the ground into a hazard zone. While grounded she uses claw swipes, a forward frost breath cone, and will occasionally take off again. Her frost breath applies the Wet debuff and can stack Freeze if you lack resistance. The ice bolt salvos have significant spread but high impact each.
Strategy
Equip Wolf Armor or drink Frost Resistance Mead before the fight. During her airborne phase, dodge the ice bolt salvos by running diagonally and conserve stamina rather than attacking; her aerial damage output is high. When she lands, rush her head and attack her neck with two-handed power attacks. Her frost breath during the grounded phase fires directly forward — circle behind her right leg to avoid it entirely. The Dragon Tear she drops is required to build the Artisan Table, which unlocks the Blast Furnace and Spinning Wheel for Plains progression.
Yagluth
Attack Patterns
Yagluth is a skeletal Fuling demigod — only his torso and arms remain, dragging himself across the altar arena. Summoned using 5 Fuling Totems, his attacks include a meteor shower from the sky targeting your position, a fire breath cone that sweeps back and forth, and a ground pound that sends fiery shockwaves radially outward. At roughly 40% health he becomes more aggressive, shortening the intervals between meteor barrages. His arena at the Plains runestone location is open and flat, giving you room to maneuver.
Strategy
Keep moving constantly — meteor positions are telegraphed by shadow circles appearing on the ground, giving you roughly 1.5 seconds to step out of the impact zone. Circle around him at medium range to bait the fire breath, then rush in for melee hits after the sweep ends. The ground pound shockwave can be jumped over at the right moment. Bring at least 2 Elemental Resistance Meads and refresh them during the fight. His Torn Spirit trophy enables the Yagluth Power, which grants resistance to fire, frost, and lightning — a passive worth using in the Ashlands.
The Queen
Attack Patterns
The Queen is the boss of the Mistlands and is fought inside her Infested Citadel dungeon, summoned using 3 Seeker Soldier trophies at the altar. She is a massive insectoid creature with multiple phases. Her attacks include a rapid claw combo dealing heavy physical damage, an acidic spit projectile with lingering poison pools, a web that immobilizes you in place, and a call that summons additional Seekers and Seeker Soldiers. Below 50% health she gains speed and adds a short-range acid explosion to her attack rotation.
Strategy
Clear the Citadel's approach rooms of Seeker patrols before engaging — being swarmed by adds during the fight is the primary cause of death. Use the Feather Cape to glide off elevated sections for repositioning. The Lightning Staff deals strong damage and its electric arcs can hit her multiple times per cast. When she webs you, mash the movement keys to break free faster. Stock 5 Eitr Meads for magic resource regeneration. Her Defeated boss power reduces Eitr consumption for magic attacks — a strong passive for magic-focused builds going into the Ashlands.
