Getting Started in Valheim

You spawn in the Meadows biome with nothing. Your first minutes: gather wood (chop trees with your fists for branches first, then craft a Stone Axe), pick up stones, and craft a basic workbench. Build a 2x3 thatch shelter before nightfall — night brings Greylings and Greydwarfs that attack exposed players. Place your workbench inside the shelter to protect it from weather damage (rain degrades wooden structures without roof coverage).

Day 1 goals: Stone Axe, Workbench, small shelter, Campfire inside shelter, 1 Deer for leather armor. Day 3 goal: full Leather Armor set and a Flint Axe (for faster wood cutting). Week 1 goal: find the Mystical Altar in the Meadows and summon Eikthyr (the first boss) using 2 Deer Trophies.

Combat Fundamentals

The parry is everything. Hold RMB (block), release RMB and immediately press RMB again as an attack is about to connect — successful parry deflects the hit and staggers the attacker. Practice on Greylings first; they have a clear wind-up. Never fight multiple enemies while surrounded — always fight one-on-one or use terrain to force single engagements. Sprint away from groups to separate them, then return to fight one at a time.

Stamina management: every attack costs stamina. Running dry mid-combo leaves you locked in place and defenseless. Learn to attack in bursts of 3–4 hits, then pause briefly to recover stamina before the next burst. The Rested buff (sit by a fire after eating) restores stamina 20% faster — always be Rested before difficult fights.

First Week Progression

After defeating Eikthyr: use Antler Pickaxe to mine Copper and Tin in the Black Forest. Build a Forge (requires Copper, Stone, Coal) and smelt Bronze (2 Copper + 1 Tin). Bronze tier equipment (Bronze Axe, Bronze Atgeir, Bronze Armor) is a massive upgrade over Leather. Explore Black Forest burial chambers for Surtling Cores — you need 5 for a Smelter and 5 for a Charcoal Kiln (coal production). Establish an outpost base near a Black Forest biome with your Forge.

Essential Tips

1. Always eat before exploring. Three food items expand your health and stamina bars dramatically. Cooked Deer Meat, Mushroom, and Berries are your early staples.
2. Mark your base on the map immediately (right-click on the map to place a marker). Getting lost without a base marker is a common early mistake.
3. The Rested buff lasts 24 minutes. Always sleep in a bed or sit by a fire before boss fights and exploration sessions.
4. Poison is brutal in the Swamp. Craft Poison Resistance Mead (requires Turnips and Honey from Meadows) before entering the Swamp biome — Blobs and Oozers will kill you otherwise.
5. Build in layers. A 2x4 core structure with a proper roof and walls resists weather. Extend outward from the core as your resources grow.
6. The Elder's Forsaken Power (unlock after defeating him) increases chopping speed by 60% — use it constantly for wood gathering.
7. Silver ore is in Mountain biomes. You need a Wishbone (drops from Bonemass, Swamp boss) to detect buried silver — defeat Bonemass before entering Mountains.

First Boss: Eikthyr

Eikthyr is a massive glowing stag with lightning antlers. Summon him at the Meadows Mystical Altar using 2 Deer Trophies (found by hunting deer with a Crude Bow). Preparation: full Leather Armor, a Bronze Atgeir or Flint Spear, 20 Cooked Meat, and a Shield. The fight: Eikthyr has three attacks — a lightning charge (dodge sideways), an AOE lightning stomp (roll away), and a frontal antler smash (parry or dodge). Stay at medium range, dodge his charge, and parry his melee swing before counterattacking with your spear. His lightning summons disappear when he dies — focus entirely on him. Flinthead Arrows (bow) deal good damage if you prefer ranged. Defeat him in under 3 minutes for a clean fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Valheim finished?
A: The Ashlands biome released in 2024 and the Mistlands biome previously. The final Deepnorth biome is still in development. The core game is fully playable.

Q: How many players can play together?
A: Up to 10 players on a dedicated server. 2–4 players is the recommended sweet spot for pacing.

Q: Is there a story?
A: A light narrative framework — you're a slain Viking warrior sent to prove your worth by defeating Odin's corrupted enemies. Most lore is environmental.

Q: Is Valheim coming to consoles?
A: No console version has been announced. PC (Steam) remains the only platform.

Q: How long until the full game releases?
A: Valheim left Early Access in partial form — the remaining biome (Deepnorth) is still being developed. The available content is 100–200+ hours regardless.
