Valheim Review
Our Verdict
Valheim is the finest survival game ever made — its parry-based combat, structural building, and boss-gated progression create an experience that transcends the genre.
Combat: Survival Game Soulsbornery
Valheim's combat is the survival genre's best. The parry timing window — press block just before an attack lands — deflects the hit completely and staggers the attacker. Parrying a troll's arm swing and following up with a two-handed sledgehammer strike is as satisfying as any dedicated action game counterattack. Stamina management is constant: sprinting, attacking, and blocking all drain it, and running dry mid-fight is often fatal. Different weapon types create tactical variety: maces deal blunt damage effective against skeletons; fire arrows stagger draugr; silver swords deal extra damage to undead and Fulings.
Boss encounters are Valheim's mechanical peaks. Eikthyr (Meadows boss) introduces the parry system through his predictable charge and lightning attacks. The Elder (Black Forest) requires fire arrows and root spawning management. Bonemass (Swamp) demands blunt weapons and poison resistance mead. Each boss tests mastery of the current tier's tools and forces specific preparation.
Building: Engineering as Art
Structural integrity changes everything. In most survival games, building is placing blocks. In Valheim, building is architecture: columns must support floors, walls must connect to foundations, roofs require proper pitch. The constraint produces creative solutions — players who master the system build extraordinary longhouses, mountain fortresses, and ocean harbor towns. The aesthetic possibilities of the Norse art direction make beautiful buildings naturally rewarding.
Progression and Exploration
The boss-gated progression creates a satisfying sense of milestones. Defeating Eikthyr unlocks antler pickaxes for copper mining. Defeating The Elder unlocks swamp key for burial chamber Surtling cores. Each boss opens the next biome meaningfully. The ocean sailing system — building a Karve, then a Longship — gives exploration a nautical dimension absent from most survival games.
Verdict
Valheim is the survival genre's masterpiece — deep combat, creative building, and respectful Norse atmosphere combine into one of PC gaming's great experiences. At under $20, it's extraordinary value.
