This guide combines the official PlayStation descriptions of the combat systems with what we saw in the first two parts of our own PS5 playthrough. It avoids numbers we could not verify.
Getting Started
You play Logan, who rejoins Team X three years after walking out on them. The game is single-player, PS5-only and not set in an open world, so the story moves you from mission to mission.
Core Mechanics to Master
Every successful attack, parry and kill builds Rage. Rage powers stronger attacks and the Healing Factor. When Logan is badly hurt, a Last Stand spends Rage to activate the Healing Factor. At the top tier, Rage unleashes a monochrome burst of violence inspired by the Black, White and Blood comics.
Best Approach for Beginners
Learn to parry early: parries build Rage as well as attacks and kills, so good defence also fills the meter you need for the Healing Factor. Use Techniques such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush against groups, and use stealth to thin out a group from above before a fight starts.
From our playthrough (Parts 1–2): the opening Telambang raid already teaches claw combat, stealth and Logan's enhanced senses, and you need those senses again in Vancouver to follow a scent trail through the industrial district. Back at the Essex Institute, Essex sends Logan through a Nightmare Door: the first Nightmare Trial is a survival fight against waves of Reavers in a snowy memory world, and finishing it opens up new abilities. Walter Langkowski then builds Logan's classic yellow suit once you bring him the materials, including supplies from Sabretooth's room.
Essential Tips & Tricks
- Keep Rage for emergencies: the Last Stand needs it.
- Parry to build Rage while staying safe.
- Ambush from above when you can.
- Use Critical Strikes when an ally such as Jean Grey opens an enemy up.
- Check the accessibility settings, which Insomniac lists for cognitive, visual, auditory and motor needs.
First Major Boss
The first major boss is Omega Red at the end of Part 1, after Team X rescues Nathaniel Essex from Trask's compound in Telambang and Omega Red rips Essex away at the extraction point. In our fight he attacked from range with his carbonadium tendrils. What worked: parry or dodge the tendrils, stagger him, then close the distance and punish with claw attacks. Our walkthrough has the full fight on video and a step-by-step route through Parts 1 and 2.
