Elden Ring is an open-world action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released on February 25, 2022, it was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding contributions from fantasy author George R.R. Martin. The game takes place in the Lands Between — a vast, seamlessly connected open world filled with legacy dungeons, hidden ruins, underground realms, and towering legacy dungeons.
As a Tarnished, players are summoned to the Lands Between to collect the shards of the shattered Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. The story is left deliberately cryptic, told through item descriptions, environmental storytelling, and NPC dialogue — a hallmark of FromSoftware's design philosophy.
