🗺️ Main Story Walkthrough
Tick off each step as you go — your progress saves locally, no account needed.
You spawn on The Island's beaches with nothing. Immediately gather Thatch and Fiber to craft Cloth Armor (5 pieces) to offset the starting cold debuff at night. Craft a Stone Pick and Stone Hatchet from your inventory to gather Flint, Stone, and Wood without a workbench. Find a freshwater river — drinking from the ocean applies a Thirst debuff from salt. Build a 2x2 Thatch shelter with a Sleeping Bag before dark; Carnos and Raptors spawn at night and will kill an unarmored Level 1 survivor in seconds. Set your spawn to the Sleeping Bag and begin leveling primarily into Weight and Health until you can place a foundation-based base.
At Level 20 unlock the Bola engram, which is essential for immobilizing small and medium dinosaurs like Raptors, Parasaurolophus, and Pteranodons for taming. Knock out tames using a Slingshot (early) or Tranquilizer Arrows from a Bow (the standard from Level 21). Feed unconscious herbivores Mejoberries or Kibble and carnivores Raw Meat or Prime Meat. A Level 1 Parasaur is your first utility tame for detecting predators; a Level 10 or higher Trike is your best early berry gatherer. Set up a Mortar and Pestle at Level 22 to craft Narcotics from Narcoberries and Spoiled Meat — Narcotics keep tames unconscious safely during long taming processes.
At Level 40 the Refining Forge unlocks, which smelts Metal Ore into Metal Ingots and Copper Ore (renamed from Flint in ASA) into usable crafting components. Build the Forge inside your base and use an Ankylosaurus (tamed in the Redwood or volcanic regions) to gather Metal Ore at 5–10x efficiency compared to a Metal Pick. The Smithy (Level 20) is required to craft Metal Tools — the Metal Pick gathers substantially more resources per swing. Transition from Thatch to Stone to Metal walls for your base; Stone resists Raptors and Carnos but not Rexes or Allos. Tame an Argentavis at Level 50–60 for aerial transport and saddle it at Level 62 — it can carry unconscious dinos in its talons for mobile taming.
The three main bosses of The Island are summoned with artifacts gathered from the 10 caves scattered across the map. Each cave requires a specific gear set — SCUBA for underwater caves like the Caverns of Lost Hope, Ghillie Armor for the swamp caves to manage heat, and Fur Armor for the Snow Cave. The three artifacts needed for the Broodmother fight are Artifact of the Hunter (East Island Cave), Artifact of the Clever (Hidden Lake Cave), and Artifact of the Massive (Dead Island Cave). Tame a high-level Rex (Level 120+ wild preferred) and pump its melee and health stats through breeding or direct leveling. A pack of 10 Rexes with 30,000+ health and 400%+ melee is the standard boss-fight setup in the community.
Once you have a breeding pair of the same species, enable Wandering or use the Mating option in the behavior menu to trigger egg production or live birth. For egg layers like Rexes, maintain Egg Incubators (or campfire rings in vanilla) at the correct temperature range shown on the egg HUD. Newborns require hand-feeding until they reach Juvenile stage — imprint bonuses (up to 30% stat boost at 100% imprint) are applied by interacting with the baby every few hours. Mutations occur randomly during breeding and add 2 levels to a stat with a color mutation; selectively breed mutated stat lines together to stack mutations on a single stat, compounding power over generations. The cap is 20 matrilineal and 20 patrilineal mutations before new mutations stop applying.
Tek-tier engrams unlock after defeating each boss — the Broodmother unlocks Tek Replicator, the Megapithecus unlocks Tek Shield and Gauntlets, and the Dragon unlocks Tek Chestpiece and Boots. Element is the primary Tek fuel, dropped in fixed quantities per boss difficulty (Gamma, Beta, or Alpha). The Tek Replicator requires Element to operate and is the only crafting station for Tek armor and weapons. Craft Fabricated Sniper Rifles and Assault Rifles for the Dragon fight, where the temperature damage matters more than in other arenas. Keep a Yutyrannus (Courage Roar buff) and a Daeodon (passive health regeneration) in your boss team for significant passive advantage.
The Overseer is the final boss of The Island and is accessed via the Terminal in the Tek Cave at the volcano's base. You must bring exactly 10 creatures into the cave — Megalosaurus perform well here because the cave is dark and they deal bonus damage at night. At the cave entrance is a terminal; insert the 3 Alpha-tier boss tributes (or 3 separate Gamma/Beta tribute sets) to open the path. The Overseer arena is in space — all spawned dinos are teleported with you. The fight involves the Overseer transforming between a Rex form and a Megapithecus form. Defeat it to trigger the Ascension cutscene, which raises your maximum character level cap and transfers you to another map or resets The Island progression at a higher difficulty.
Efficient resource gathering in ARK depends heavily on using the correct tame for each material. Ankylosaurus gathers Metal and Crystal at massively boosted rates. Doedicurus (Doed) gathers Stone. Castoroides gathers Wood from trees at high yield. Beavers also produce a large inventory dam structure full of Wood and Cementing Paste when their dam is looted. Therizinosaurus gather Fiber, Thatch, and Berries. Manage your Anky and Doed on a platform saddle Brontosaurus or in an Argentavis talon for fast return trips from metal mountains. Keep a Cryofridge powered to store all tames as Cryopods — frozen dinos do not consume food and can be deployed instantly in boss arenas.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Broodmother Lysrix
Attack Patterns
Broodmother Lysrix is summoned at the Obelisk terminals by inserting the three required artifacts and associated trophies (Argentavis Talon, Sauropod Vertebra, Sarco Skin, Titanoboa Venom, and Megalodont Tooth for Gamma). She spawns waves of Araneo (giant spiders) continuously throughout the fight that slow movement on hit. Her personal attacks include a web projectile that immobilizes targets and an AoE acid spit. Her health pool scales significantly between Gamma (172,800), Beta (345,600), and Alpha (691,200). The spider adds are her most dangerous mechanic — a player caught in web while surrounded by Araneo dies quickly.
Strategy
Dismount and remain on foot during the fight — your Rexes deal the damage while you issue attack commands. Stand behind your Rex line and use the Yutyrannus Courage Roar every 20 seconds to boost all nearby dinos. The Daeodon's passive healing aura activates when creatures are below 100% HP and will sustain your Rex pack through the spider wave damage. Have all Rexes set to attack one target at a time via the whistle commands. For Gamma difficulty, a team of 10 Rexes with 25,000 HP and 350% melee will clear the fight without casualties. Alpha difficulty requires significantly higher stats and Tek Saddles for damage reduction.
Megapithecus
Attack Patterns
Megapithecus is a colossal silverback gorilla summoned using the Artifact of the Brute, Artifact of the Clever, and Artifact of the Massive along with associated trophies. He hurls boulders from a distance that deal massive knockback and damage, smashes the ground with both fists in a wide shockwave AoE, and periodically spawns Mesopithecus (small monkey) minions that swarm players on foot. The boulder throws have a very long range and can hit your Rex pack if they are grouped too tightly. He does not have a phase transition but increases attack frequency below 30% health.
Strategy
Space your Rexes in a line rather than a cluster to minimize boulder AoE splash. Keep the Yutyrannus at the back of your formation and roar every cooldown. Megapithecus is the easiest of the three main Island bosses — his health-to-DPS ratio is lower than the Broodmother or Dragon at equivalent difficulties. On Gamma, a 7-Rex team is sufficient. Focus Rexes on his body rather than legs to avoid the fist slam AoE. The Megalosaurus is a strong alternative to Rexes for this boss specifically, dealing nighttime damage bonuses in the cave leading to the arena.
Dragon
Attack Patterns
The Dragon is summoned using the Artifact of the Cunning, Artifact of the Skylord, and Artifact of the Immune. It is universally considered the hardest of the three main Island bosses. Its fire breath applies a burn DoT that deals percentage-based damage to dinosaur health pools — a single fire breath pass across your Rex line can kill multiple high-health Rexes within seconds if they are lined up. It also flies out of melee reach periodically, uses a tail swipe, and has a flame burst AoE on landing. Its arena temperature is dangerously hot, gradually draining health without heat protection.
Strategy
Equip a Hazard Suit or Ghillie Armor to counter the arena heat. Do NOT pack your Rexes together — spread them in a wide line so a single fire breath cannot cleave through multiple dinos simultaneously. The Dragon lands periodically; rush your Rexes onto it the moment it touches down and command attack. During its airborne phases, use Fabricated Sniper Rifles from cover. The Yutyrannus Courage Roar is critical here to counter its Fear Roar, which can cause dinos to flee into the fire. Alpha Dragon requires the highest stats of all Island bosses; many tribes bring 15+ Rexes to compensate for expected losses.
Overseer
Attack Patterns
The Overseer is accessed via the Tek Cave and fought in a zero-gravity orbital arena. It shapeshifts between a Rex form and a Megapithecus form, inheriting the attacks and size of each. In its base humanoid form it fires seeking energy orbs and a close-range energy burst. It also deploys Defense Units (flying drones) and Attack Drones that target players and tames simultaneously. The arena is circular and has no cover; positioning is entirely in the open. The fight ends when the Overseer's health is depleted; its health pool scales by difficulty similar to the three main bosses.
Strategy
Megalosaurus deal a passive damage bonus in dark environments and the Tek Cave is sufficiently dark to trigger it. Enter the arena with all creatures in Cryopods and deploy them immediately. Keep the Yutyrannus at the back and roar on cooldown. Attack Drones should be handled by a player on foot with a Shotgun or Tek Rifle while the Rex army focuses on the Overseer's current form. The Rex transformation phase is the most vulnerable window — stack maximum melee hits during it. Ascension rewards include a raised level cap (by 5 per difficulty tier) and an Ascension flag cosmetic for your base.
