Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Review
Our Verdict
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac's finest achievement — spectacular traversal, dual-protagonist storytelling, and one of the PS5's most technically accomplished experiences.
Combat: Expanded and Spectacular
Peter's Symbiote abilities transform his combat approach — the aggressive tentacle grabs and slam attacks contrast sharply with his gadget-focused base kit. Miles's expanded bioelectric moves maintain his distinct style while adding new chain-combo opportunities. Both characters share an improved parry mechanic (L1 timed block) that creates counter-attack windows. Enemy variety has expanded significantly: Hunters, Symbiote-infected civilians, and Kraven's mercenaries each require different approaches.
Gameplay and World
The expanded map (Brooklyn and Queens added alongside Manhattan) is the most detailed open world in any superhero game. Wing suit traversal across the bridges between boroughs is genuinely exhilarating. Side activities (Spider-Bots, Symbiote Nests, EMF experiments, Photo missions) are more varied than the previous game's repetitive towers. The hour count is shorter than Spider-Man 2018 but the pacing is tighter.
Story and Characters
The Venom story — Harry Osborn's tragedy, Peter's corruption, the emotional cost of the symbiote — is handled with genuine dramatic weight. Miles's parallel story about loss and legacy adds depth. Kraven is a more nuanced villain than his marketing suggested. The emotional climaxes in Act 2 and 3 are the series' best.
Verdict
Essential PS5 exclusive. Spider-Man 2 is a technical and narrative achievement that sets the standard for superhero games.
