Our Verdict

Helldivers 2 is the best co-op shooter in years — a hilarious, tense, friendly-fire-fueled war machine whose live Galactic War gives every drop real stakes.

Combat and the Stratagem System

Helldivers 2's combat is built on a simple tension: your starting weapons are deliberately underpowered against the larger threats, so survival depends on the Stratagems you call in. Inputting a code — up, down, left, right sequences — while sprinting from a swarm is genuinely thrilling, and the moment-to-moment decision of when to spend a long-cooldown Orbital Laser versus a quick Eagle Airstrike is the heart of the game. The gunplay itself is weighty and satisfying, with meaningful recoil and ragdoll physics that sell every impact.

Co-op and Friendly Fire

This is one of the great co-op experiences. The permanent friendly fire transforms teamwork from a buzzword into a constant negotiation: you call out airstrike directions, you watch your muzzle around teammates, and you laugh hard when it all goes wrong. Playing solo is viable but misses the point entirely. With three friends and voice comms, it is among the most fun games of its generation.

The Galactic War and Live Service

The persistent war is what elevates Helldivers 2 above a standard horde shooter. Major Orders task the entire playerbase with liberating specific planets within real-world deadlines, and the developers narratively react to community outcomes. When the Automatons were thought "defeated" and then dramatically returned, the entire community felt it. The warbond (battle pass) monetization is fair and fully earnable through play.

Graphics, Performance, and Polish

Planets are atmospheric and varied — acid swamps, blizzards, blood-red deserts — and the particle-heavy chaos of a late-game extraction is a spectacle. Launch was rocky, with server capacity issues that locked players out, and performance still dips during the densest fights. Patches have stabilized matchmaking considerably, though occasional crashes persist.

Verdict

Helldivers 2 nails the fantasy of being a disposable soldier in an absurd, satirical war machine. It is funny, tense, and endlessly replayable. The technical hiccups and balance swings are real, but the core is exceptional.
