Helldivers 2 is a third-person squad shooter that drops up to four players onto hostile planets to "spread Managed Democracy" on behalf of Super Earth. It is the rare sequel that reinvents its predecessor's top-down twin-stick formula into a full over-the-shoulder shooter without losing the original's chaotic, friendly-fire-driven comedy. Every bullet, orbital strike, and 500kg bomb is real — teammates can and will be flattened by a misplaced stratagem.
The core loop is the Stratagem system: rather than a static loadout, you call in support weapons, sentries, airstrikes, and resupplies mid-mission by inputting directional code combinations on the fly while under fire. Learning to dial in an Orbital Railcannon Strike with a Bile Titan bearing down on you is the game's defining skill. Three enemy factions — the bug-like Terminids, the robotic Automatons, and the squid-like Illuminate — each demand completely different loadouts and tactics.
Wrapping everything is the persistent Galactic War: a community meta-layer where the collective success or failure of every player worldwide shifts the front lines across the galaxy. Liberating or losing planets in real time gives even a quick 20-minute drop a sense of consequence that most live-service shooters never achieve.
Call down support weapons, sentries, and orbital strikes by entering directional combos under pressure. Your real loadout is decided in the moment.
There is no team-damage toggle. Every airstrike, mine, and stray round can kill an ally — positioning and comms are survival skills.
A live, community-wide campaign. Planets are won and lost based on the combined effort of every player, shifting the map daily.
Spend Samples and Requisition on Destroyer ship modules that buff stratagems, plus warbond unlocks for weapons and armor passives.
