Summary

Devil May Cry 5 was well reviewed (Metacritic 84-89 depending on platform) for its three distinct playable characters and Style Rank system.

Combat: Three Characters

Nero's Devil Breaker system gives him a set of prosthetic arms with different abilities. Dante combines four Styles (Swordmaster, Gunslinger, Trickster, Royal Guard) and can switch between them. V commands Griffon, Shadow and Nightmare rather than fighting directly. The Style Rank meter, from D to SSS, rewards variety.

Modes and Editions

Bloody Palace, a wave-based survival mode, was added free on 1 April 2019. The Special Edition (Xbox Series X|S 10 November 2020, PS5 12 November 2020) adds Vergil, Turbo Mode, Legendary Dark Knight mode, up to 120 fps and ray-tracing options. Vergil was paid DLC on PS4, PC and Xbox One. A Devil Hunter Edition came to Switch 2 on 23 June 2026 without Turbo Mode or Legendary Dark Knight.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack includes “Devil Trigger” (Nero), “Subhuman” (Dante), “Crimson Cloud” (V), “Legacy” (ending theme) and, in the Special Edition, “Bury the Light” (Vergil's theme).

Reception and Sales

Metacritic: PC 89, PS5 89, PS4 88, Xbox One 87, Xbox Series 84. Sales reached 14.24 million units as of June 2026, the best-selling game in the franchise.

Verdict

A well-reviewed action game with three distinct characters. On PC and consoles, the Special Edition is the version that includes Vergil.
