Senua's Saga: Hellblade II Review

Presentation: A Technical Marvel

Hellblade II is, frame for frame, one of the best-looking games ever made. Photogrammetry-captured Icelandic landscapes, extraordinary facial animation, and immaculate lighting create a level of immersion that borders on the cinematic. The binaural audio is just as impressive: with headphones, the Furies surround you, and the sound design alone justifies the experience.

Story and Senua

The narrative is a focused, mythic tale of trauma, community, and confronting monsters both literal and internal. Melina Juergens's performance as Senua is remarkable, and the game's representation of psychosis remains its most distinctive and respectfully handled element. It is more restrained and less harrowing than the first game, which some will prefer and others will miss.

Combat and Mechanics

Combat is intimate and brutal — slow, weighty duels resolved one enemy at a time with dodges, parries, and a focus mechanic. It is cinematic and satisfying in the moment but mechanically shallow, with little build variety or progression. The puzzles, built around perspective and rune-matching, are atmospheric but rarely taxing.

Length and Value

At 6-8 hours and entirely linear with no meaningful replay systems, Hellblade II is a deliberate, contained experience. Whether that is a strength or a weakness depends entirely on what you want. As an authored, once-through interactive fable, it is superb; as a traditional action game measured by mechanical depth, it is slight.

Verdict

Hellblade II is best understood as an interactive piece of art. Its presentation is unmatched and its story moving, even if the mechanics are intentionally simple. Go in for the experience, with headphones, and it will stay with you.
