Getting Started in Bloodborne

The game opens in Yharnam, and after the opening you wake in the Hunter's Dream, your hub. There the Plain Doll levels your stats (she is available once you enter your first boss arena or gain 1 Insight), Bath Messengers sell and buy items, and you can warp to any Lamp you have lit. The Cleric Beast, at the far end of the Great Bridge in Central Yharnam, is likely the first boss you will meet, but the fight is optional (it is needed only for the Sword Hunter Badge).

Insight is tracked separately from Blood Echoes: gaining 1 Insight opens a second set of Messengers who sell equipment for Insight.

Core Mechanics to Master

The Rally system lets you recover part of the health you lose to a hit by attacking back soon afterward. This is why backing away after a hit is often a mistake.

The Visceral Attack is your firearm's main purpose: fire your gun just as an enemy's attack connects (not before it starts), then follow up with a charged attack on the staggered enemy. It works on some bosses too, which can shorten the fight.

Stats and Build Basics

The stats are Vitality (HP), Endurance (stamina and status resistances), Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge (damage from blood-type weapons such as firearms) and Arcane. Strength and Skill increase damage from physical weapons, and the stat requirements of each weapon determine which you can use well. Spread points only as far as your weapon needs, and raise Vitality to survive hits.

Essential Tips

1. Attack after being hit. Rally lets you win back health by trading blows.
2. Use fire against Father Gascoigne. He is weak to fire in both his human and beast forms (Fextralife).
3. Lamps are free warps. From the Hunter's Dream you can warp to any lit Lamp.
4. Watch your Insight. It unlocks the Insight Messengers shop and the Beckoning Bell, but each point lowers your Beasthood and Frenzy resistance, and some enemies change at higher thresholds (for example, Church Doctors fire projectiles at 15 Insight).
5. Missable NPC questlines. Several NPC storylines can be missed, so talk to characters at each Lamp.
6. The Old Hunters expansion: Fextralife describes the route as defeating Vicar Amelia, collecting the Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter from a Messenger in the Hunter's Dream, and reaching the Hunter's Nightmare from Cathedral Ward via a Lesser Amygdala.

Father Gascoigne

Father Gascoigne is at the end of Central Yharnam. The fight has three phases: human with an axe and blunderbuss, a human phase with a transformed axe at roughly 75 to 80 percent health, and a beast form at 50 percent or below, which Fextralife calls the hardest. He is weak to fire, so Molotov Cocktails and Oil Urns are effective, especially in beast form. The Tiny Music Box, given by Gascoigne's daughter near the sewer shortcut gate in the Central Yharnam plaza, stuns him in human form and once in beast form; using it three times in human form triggers his transformation immediately.
