Returnal is Housemarque's extraordinary PS5 launch title — a third-person bullet hell roguelite that combines the studio's arcade DNA with the emotional depth of a psychological horror narrative. Selene Vassos, an ASTRA Corp scout, crashes on the alien planet Atropos and discovers that dying only resets her back to the crash site, with the alien ruins shifting around her. Each loop she finds new recordings, new rooms, and pieces of a mystery involving her own past.
The bullet hell combat is unlike anything else in a third-person game. Enemy projectiles fill the screen in dense patterns requiring constant movement and dodge timing. Selene's suit has a Integrity meter (health), an Adrenaline level (bonus stats from kills without taking damage), and an Overload mechanic (reload timing). Every weapon has an Alt-Fire that charges during combat and delivers powerful alternate attacks. Parasites attach to Selene, providing buffs with corresponding debuffs that create risk/reward decisions throughout each run.
The PC port (Ascension edition) adds two-player online co-op Tower of Sisyphus mode and photo mode. DualSense haptic feedback on PS5 makes the weapon feedback one of the most tactile shooter experiences available.
Dense enemy projectile patterns in a third-person action framework — dodging, sprinting, and jumping through bullet curtains at speed.
Parasites attach with mixed blessings — a damage boost might come with healing reduction. Managing which parasites to accept defines high-level play.
Weapons, suit upgrades, and house content persist across runs. Each loop you carry back knowledge and incremental unlocks even in defeat.
Two-player online co-op in the Tower of Sisyphus mode adds a challenge escalation loop with shared and individual loot.
