About Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is BioWare's action RPG return to Thedas, ten years after Inquisition. You play Rook, a customizable hero who must assemble a team of seven companions to stop the elven gods Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain — freed when Solas's ritual goes wrong — from unmaking the world. It is a more action-forward, companion-focused entry than its predecessors.

Combat is real-time and reflex-driven: you directly control Rook across three classes — Warrior, Rogue, and Mage — with dodging, parrying, and a combo system, while issuing commands to two active companions through an ability wheel. Detonating elemental combos between Rook and companions is the tactical heart of fights, and a deep skill tree lets you specialize each class into distinct builds.

The Veilguard leans heavily into its companions: deep relationship arcs, loyalty missions, and a hub (the Lighthouse) where bonds develop. The writing tone is lighter and the structure more linear and curated than Inquisition's open zones, which divided longtime fans — but the polished combat and strong companion stories make it a confident, if safer, BioWare RPG.

Community Tips

“Build around combos. Have one party member prime an element (e.g. chill/sunder) and another detonate it — combo damage trivializes tough fights.”

“Do companion loyalty quests as they unlock. Their upgraded abilities and the story payoff are worth pausing the main quest for.”

“Parry timing beats dodging on many elite enemies — a perfect parry staggers them and opens a big punish window.”
