🗺️ Main Story Walkthrough

Tick off each step as you go — your progress saves locally, no account needed.

Step 1 of 7
Act 1 — The End of the Beginning: Minrathous and the Ritual

You play as Rook, customizable protagonist and leader of the Veilguard, called in by master assassin Neve Gallus to stop the ancient elf Solas from completing a world-altering ritual in Minrathous. Fighting through Venatori cultists and demons, you reach Solas at the ritual site but cannot stop the ceremony entirely — two imprisoned elven gods, Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain, are accidentally freed. Solas escapes, and your companion Varric is critically wounded in the process. This opening mission establishes Rook's faction background and introduces the dodge-parry-and-ability combat system. Complete the optional environmental takedowns in the Minrathous streets to unlock early ability upgrade materials.

Step 2 of 7
Act 1 — Assembling the Veilguard: The Lighthouse and Companions

Rook awakens in the Lighthouse, a Fade sanctuary that serves as the base of operations throughout the game. The primary goal of Act 1 is assembling the Veilguard by recruiting five specialist companions across multiple regions. Bellara Lutare (Veil Jumper mage) is first, found in Arlathan Forest. Lucanis Dellamorte (Antivan Crows assassin) is recruited from Treviso or Dock Town depending on your faction choice. Emmrich Volkarin (necromancer) and Taash (dragon hunter) come later. Each companion questline gates significant ability upgrades, so prioritize companion quests alongside story missions throughout Act 1.

Step 3 of 7
Act 1 — The Grey Wardens and the Siege of Weisshaupt

The midpoint of Act 1 involves earning Grey Warden support by recruiting Davrin and his griffon Assan in the High Anderfels. A critical choice divides Act 1: you must save either Treviso or Minrathous from a blighted dragon attack — the city you abandon suffers permanent consequences for the companion associated with it (Lucanis or Neve). The Siege of Weisshaupt is the Act 1 climax, where the newly assembled Veilguard fights through darkspawn and faces the archdemon Razikale. Ghilan'nain intervenes and the battle ends in a devastating loss that sets the tone for Act 2. Have all six companions fully recruited before triggering the Siege.

Step 4 of 7
Act 2 — The Price of the Past: Recovery and Counteroffensive

Following the losses at Weisshaupt, Act 2 focuses on regrouping and striking back at Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan's growing power. The Gloom Howler (Isseya) is a major Act 2 boss encountered during the Cauldron quest — destroy her blight growths and boils to strip her barrier before inflicting direct damage. The blighted dragons Seartooth Vyrantus (fire) and Corius the Icetalon (ice) are fought during branching quests based on which city was saved in Act 1. Throughout Act 2, complete companion personal quests as they become available — they provide critical Ability Point upgrades and unlock companion-specific dialogue during the Act 3 finale.

Step 5 of 7
Act 2 — Confronting Ghilan'nain: Isle of the Gods

The Act 2 centerpiece is the assault on the Isle of the Gods to confront Ghilan'nain directly. She is shielded by a Blight barrier that cannot be broken by direct damage — the fight revolves entirely around destroying scattered Blight Boils across the arena while fending off continuous darkspawn waves. Once her shield falls, a cutscene ends the fight. The choice during this quest of which companion sacrifices themselves to deal the killing blow is permanent and changes Act 3 dialogue. Bring Davrin and Lucanis in your party for maximum story relevance; Solas assists with exposition before the final strike.

Step 6 of 7
Act 2 — Point of No Return: When Plans Align

The quest When Plans Align is the explicit point of no return for all Act 2 side content. Complete every available companion quest, faction reputation mission, and regional side quest before proceeding. Particularly important are Emmrich's full questline (unlocks critical necromancy combat passives), Taash's questline (required for Elgar'nan Phase 3 Cold-damage setup), and any outstanding faction quests in Minrathous or Treviso. Your total companion ability upgrades at this point directly determine how many combat options you have available for the Act 3 boss sequence. Do not proceed until all companion quest markers are cleared.

Step 7 of 7
Act 3 — The Wrath of Ages: The Dragon, the Dread Wolf, and Elgar'nan

Act 3 is a focused finale chapter with three primary confrontations: a dragon fight tied to Solas's plan, the emotional resolution of Solas's arc (which does not involve a combat encounter — the choice to fight him is cosmetic only), and the climactic battle against Elgar'nan. The final boss is a three-phase encounter where Elgar'nan is immune to Fire and vulnerable to Cold in Phase 3. Ensure Taash has Cold-damage skills equipped before entering Act 3. After defeating Elgar'nan, the game's ending diverges based on your accumulated choices regarding companion sacrifices, city outcomes, and your decision about Solas — multiple endings exist.

⚔️ Boss Guides

⚔️

Gloom Howler (Isseya)

Weakness
Fire damage; Necrotic resistance; barrier must be stripped via Blight Boils before any damage registers
Recommended Gear
Fire-damage abilities; burning stacks; skills that lock enemies in place; Burning Pictos or equivalent

Attack Patterns

The Gloom Howler Isseya is encountered during The Cauldron in Act 2. She enters the fight protected by an impenetrable barrier; the only way to remove it is by destroying Blight Growths beneath her, then detonating three Blight Boils around the arena. She flies evasively around the arena, making her difficult to keep in place, and spawns additional darkspawn waves while her barrier is active. At roughly 75% HP she retreats and seeds new Blight Boils, forcing a second barrier-breaking cycle.

Strategy

Destroy all Blight Growths as the first priority — attacking Isseya directly with her barrier active accomplishes nothing. Clear each wave of darkspawn quickly to reduce pressure during the Blight Boil hunt. Once the barrier drops, apply Burning status and use skills that immobilize or stagger her to prevent her from repositioning. She is weak to Fire and resists Necrotic damage. During the second Blight Boil cycle at 75% HP, assign one party member to holding off the new darkspawn spawn while you focus on the boils to avoid being overwhelmed.

⚔️

Seartooth Vyrantus

Weakness
Ice damage; purple glowing weak points on the body deal bonus damage when hit; Fire resistant
Recommended Gear
Ice-damage abilities; skills that can target body weak points; anti-knockback gear recommended

Attack Patterns

Seartooth Vyrantus is a blighted fire dragon fought during On Blighted Wings in Act 1 and Act 2. Its attacks include a fireball projectile with mild homing properties, a wide horizontal arc fire breath, a diving crash-landing attack from height, and an unblockable charging body slam. The body slam has the longest wind-up but the most punishing knockback. Glowing purple weak points appear at various points on the body throughout the fight.

Strategy

Exploit the Ice-damage weakness through Ability selections and weapon affixes before this fight. For the homing fireball, wait until the last moment before dodging to maximize invincibility frame coverage. For the fire breath arc, circle around the dragon's flank during the sweep. The body slam requires a direct lateral dodge — dodging directly away is insufficient. Target every purple glowing weak point the moment it appears using your highest-damage focused skill; hitting these points deals multiplied damage and staggered the dragon briefly. Avoid using Fire skills entirely as the dragon is resistant throughout.

⚔️

Ghilan''nain

Weakness
Cannot be damaged directly; fight ends via Blight Boil destruction; darkspawn waves are the primary threat
Recommended Gear
High sustained AoE for darkspawn waves; Davrin recommended in party; Fire-damage skills for darkspawn vulnerability

Attack Patterns

Ghilan'nain, Mother of Monsters, is fought on the Isle of the Gods. She is protected by a Blight Shield that renders her immune to all direct damage. She continuously directs waves of darkspawn at Rook while standing in place on her barrier platform. The fight has no traditional attack-and-dodge loop against the boss herself; all threats come from darkspawn melee and ranged enemies. The fight ends through a cutscene once her Blight Shield is destroyed.

Strategy

Focus entirely on destroying the scattered Blight Boils around the arena while managing the darkspawn waves with AoE abilities. Darkspawn are vulnerable to Fire damage — if your build includes fire skills, this fight is significantly easier. Bring Davrin in your party for his Grey Warden-specific dialogue and combat bonuses against darkspawn. Do not attempt to damage Ghilan'nain directly at any point. Once all Blight Boils are destroyed, the Blight Shield collapses and the cutscene takes over. Choose which companion delivers the killing blow based on which sacrifice outcome you prefer for Act 3.

⚔️

Elgar''nan (Final Boss)

Weakness
Phase 1 and 2: vulnerable to Necrotic; Phase 3: immune to Fire, vulnerable to Cold; Electric resistance throughout
Recommended Gear
Taash with Cold-damage skills for Phase 3; Emmrich for Necrotic damage Phases 1–2; dodge-heavy build; Cold-damage weapon affix

Attack Patterns

Elgar'nan is the true final boss of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, fought in three phases. Phase 1 is a full-party fight with Elgar'nan using sword slashes, elemental projections, and summoned Archdemon support. Phase 2 removes all companions from the fight — Rook fights alone in darkness, with Elgar'nan bombarding the arena with his attacks while no allies can assist. Phase 3 returns companions and adds new attacks including a slam combining electricity and sword force, and circular flame perimeters. In Phase 3 he becomes immune to Fire and gains Cold vulnerability.

Strategy

In Phase 1, use Emmrich's Necrotic skills as your primary damage dealer — Elgar'nan is Vulnerable to Necrotic and Resistant to Electric throughout the fight. In Phase 2, focus entirely on evasion and survival rather than offense; the phase ends on a timer, and taking heavy damage here without companion healing is a common party wipe scenario. In Phase 3, immediately switch to Cold-damage skills using Taash as your primary attacker — his Fire immunity makes any pre-built fire skill rotation useless. When the circular flame perimeter appears, relocate to the gap and continue Cold-damage pressure. Solas assists with the final killing blow regardless of your choice to fight him.
