🗺️ Main Story Walkthrough

Tick off each step as you go — your progress saves locally, no account needed.

Step 1 of 8
Mino Province — The Sengoku Origin

Nioh 2 opens in 1555 Mino Province, where you play as a half-human, half-Yokai mercenary nicknamed Hide. The first main mission, The Village of Cursed Blossoms, introduces the three-stance combat system (Low, Mid, High), Ki Pulse timing for stamina recovery, and the Burst Counter — a counter attack triggered against red-glowing enemy charge attacks. Mezuki is the first boss, weak to Water talismans and punished heavily by staying close to drain his Ki bar. Collect every Kodama (green leaf spirits) hidden throughout each mission — each region's Kodama count grants passive bonus items on shrine rest, which accumulates to hundreds of free consumables by mid-game.

Step 2 of 8
Sunomata & Battle of Okehazama — Meeting Nobunaga

The early story missions advance through historical Sengoku battles where you fight alongside (and eventually against) Oda Nobunaga. The Hidden Monsters of Okehazama mission introduces Imagawa Yoshimoto as a human boss — human bosses throughout the game are consistently easier than Yokai encounters due to predictable attack patterns. The Mysterious One Night Castle follows, set in a spectral castle that only exists for a single night — the environment itself shifts between light and dark zones that buff different enemy types. Stock up at the blacksmith between each region; forging soul-matched armor at upgrade level +4 or above significantly boosts Ki recovery speed.

Step 3 of 8
The Hollow Fortress & Mount Ibuki — Yokai Surge

The Hollow Fortress mission pits you against Enenra, a smoke-and-vapor Yokai whose Tornado attack must be Burst Countered to avoid lethal damage. Bring Water Talismans (purchasable from the blacksmith) as Enenra is heavily weak to water. Mount Ibuki hosts Yatsu-no-Kami, a massive snake deity widely considered one of Nioh 2's hardest bosses due to constant arm-spawn patterns and sweeping AOE poison attacks. The strategic priority for this region is learning to cancel the Burst Counter animation by immediately performing a Ki Pulse — mastering this cuts boss fight durations by 30% and is the technique that separates intermediate from advanced players.

Step 4 of 8
Nara & Togoku — The Spirit Stone Crisis

The narrative shifts to Nara Province and the Togoku region as Spirit Stones begin corrupting historical figures into Yokai hybrids. Key bosses include Tatarimokke, an owl Yokai with a predictable dive sequence easily Burst Countered, and the Obsidian Samurai, a Dark Realm encounter (the arena darkens, boosting all enemy stats). When entering a Dark Realm zone, prioritize killing the realm-generating Yokai (usually a Tatarimokke or Enenra variant) to restore normal lighting and enemy stats. Equip Guardian Spirit accessories between missions — each Guardian Spirit's passive bonuses scale with Animosity level, which increases by using Yokai Abilities in combat.

Step 5 of 8
Kinai & Tokai Regions — The Factionalized War

Kinai and Tokai bring the game's most complex human-boss encounters: Tokichiro (Hide's closest ally, now rival) and Hattori Hanzo (master ninja). Tokichiro is stunlockable with the Spear's Spear Flourish skill, which chains hits into knockdown. Hanzo is the most technically demanding human boss — he uses the full spear and ninja weapon repertoire and punishes predictable patterns. Equip at least two Soul Cores to your Guardian Spirit by this point; the best general-purpose cores are Enenra Soul Core (for a ranged Yokai ability with knockback) and Ippon-Datara Soul Core (for a powerful fire AoE used during Yokai Shift). The Ninjutsu skill Paralysis Shuriken from the Ninjutsu tree becomes available in Kinai and is essential for controlling multi-enemy encounters in subsequent missions.

Step 6 of 8
Kyushu Region — Lady Osakabe & Shuten Doji

The Kyushu region escalates both narrative stakes and enemy density. Lady Osakabe is a four-armed spider Yokai who fights via a “Ki drain at range” tactic — she deliberately drains your Ki bar using arm-tethers if you hang back. Stay mid-range and attack one arm at a time to deplete the limb Ki and force staggers. Shuten Doji is the region's marquee boss — a powerful drinking demon whose attacks gain unpredictable chaotic properties when he enters his “intoxicated” phase. Burst Counter his red aura attacks consistently to prevent intoxication buildup. By Kyushu, aim to have armor that provides at least 700 total defense and equip the Shiftling's Earring for increased Yokai Shift gauge generation.

Step 7 of 8
The Siege of Osaka — Tokichiro's True Form

The penultimate story arc culminates at the Siege of Osaka, where Tokichiro fully transforms and becomes the final major antagonist. His second form as a fully corrupted Yokai uses improved counters and enhanced combos compared to the earlier human encounter. The battle of Sekigahara side missions in this region offer unique Ethereal-quality loot that rivals or exceeds endgame drops — run two or three of these before the final main mission. Kashin Koji, a sorcerer boss in this arc, uses all elemental attack types and requires regular position resets to avoid his mage-phase when he becomes stationary and unleashes projectile volleys. Equip Rejuvenation Talismans on your active slot before Koji — continuous healing offsets his sustained DoT damage patterns.

Step 8 of 8
In the Eye of the Beholder — Otakemaru

The final main mission sends you to confront Otakemaru, a three-form demon overlord and the true source of the Spirit Stone corruption. His three forms shift between fire, ice, and lightning element attacks, each phase requiring a different positioning approach. Continuous movement around him is the core strategy — sprinting in a circle prevents most homing attacks from connecting. After defeating Otakemaru, the game's credit rolls and Dream of the Samurai difficulty (New Game Plus equivalent) unlocks, along with the Way of the Samurai's expanded mission roster. The DLC campaigns — Tengu's Disciple, Darkness in the Capital, and The First Samurai — each add a full story arc and are recommended before attempting Dream of the Demon difficulty.

⚔️ Boss Guides

⚔️

Mezuki

Weakness
Water element; Ki bar is low — staying aggressive depletes it rapidly for a knockdown
Recommended Gear
Water Talisman ×5; any starting weapon at upgrade +2; Rejuvenation Talisman for healing

Attack Patterns

Mezuki is a horse-headed demon wielding a giant cleaver. His primary attacks are long-range cleaver sweeps, a charging dash, and a rear-kick that hits players directly behind him. He uses frequent red-glow Burst attacks that signal a powerful committed swing. His Ki pool is relatively low for a boss, meaning sustained aggression depletes it to zero faster than most players expect.

Strategy

Apply a Water Talisman to your weapon before entering for immediate water elemental buildup. Stay at mid-range and dodge toward him (not away) when he commits to sweeping attacks, placing you at his flank for two or three free hits. When his Ki bar empties, he staggers — use a grapple or strong attack on his downed state for a large damage burst. Burst Counter his red-glow charges rather than dodging to drain even more Ki per exchange. Human-speed opponents feel manageable after mastering Mezuki's patterns.

⚔️

Enenra

Weakness
Water element; Tornado Burst attack is the prime Burst Counter opportunity
Recommended Gear
Water Talisman ×5; Enenra Soul Core (drops from regular Enenra enemies) for the irony of using his own ability

Attack Patterns

Enenra is a smoke-and-fire Yokai composed entirely of vaporous darkness. His moveset includes a smoke-cloud dash-through (passes through your body dealing damage), multiple sweeping claw slashes, and his signature Tornado — a rising vortex of smoke that deals massive damage and has a large hitbox. The Tornado is his primary Burst Counter target, glowing red as he winds up. He has above-average Ki for an early boss.

Strategy

Equip a Water Talisman and apply it immediately in the fight. Circle left continuously to reduce his tracking on the smoke-dash. When the Tornado red-glow appears, position yourself beside him (not in front) and execute the Burst Counter by pressing Triangle + Circle simultaneously — this hits his vortex core for massive Ki drain. After a successful Burst Counter, follow with a full Mid-stance combo. Avoid using Fire-based Yokai abilities as Enenra absorbs them.

⚔️

Yatsu-no-Kami

Weakness
Slow body movement; arm clusters must be targeted individually to prevent infinite respawning
Recommended Gear
Purification Talisman for poison cleanse; high-poise armor (700+ defense total); Sloth Talisman if available

Attack Patterns

Yatsu-no-Kami is a colossal snake deity that spawns smaller snake-arm clusters from its body throughout the fight. These arms attack independently, apply poison, and respawn if not killed in sequence. His full-body slam covers a wide radius and his poison-pool breath fills the arena floor with persistent poison patches. The true danger is the cumulative chaos of multiple arm spawns plus his own attacks running simultaneously.

Strategy

Target and destroy arm clusters immediately upon spawn — use a High-stance wide attack like an axe or odachi sweep to hit multiple arms at once. Bring five Purification Talismans or Antidotes to neutralize poison buildup before it reaches maximum. Attack Yatsu's main body only during the post-slam recovery phase when all arms are temporarily retracted. The Sloth Talisman (Onmyo magic, available from the blacksmith by mid-game) dramatically reduces his movement speed and is legal in all difficulty settings.

⚔️

Shuten Doji

Weakness
Burst Counter during his red-aura Intoxicated attacks; attacking from behind halves his natural defense
Recommended Gear
Fire Talisman; Enko Guardian Spirit for fire Yokai Shift; Rejuvenation Talisman for sustained healing

Attack Patterns

Shuten Doji is a massive horned demon who drinks from a gourd throughout the fight, gradually entering an Intoxicated phase that alters his attack patterns randomly. Sober attacks are predictable overhead slams and shoulder charges. Intoxicated attacks add erratic spinning slashes, a lunge that extends mid-animation, and a sake-breath that creates a large AoE poison-fire puddle. His red-glow Burst attacks become more frequent the more intoxicated he becomes.

Strategy

Prioritize Burst Countering his red-glow attacks each time they appear to prevent Intoxication level from rising — each successful counter resets one tier of Intoxication. Position at his back whenever possible for the 50% defense reduction. When he raises the gourd to drink, sprint around to his rear and deliver three or four hits before he lowers it. Apply a Fire Talisman (despite his fire-adjacent aesthetic, he has below-average fire resistance compared to water) for consistent elemental buildup.

⚔️

Lady Osakabe

Weakness
Each arm has an independent Ki bar — depleting one arm staggers it for a multi-hit punish
Recommended Gear
A fast weapon (dual swords or sword) for per-arm Ki depletion; Paralysis Shuriken Ninjutsu; mid-weight armor for sprint speed

Attack Patterns

Lady Osakabe is a four-armed spider woman. Her main attacks include individual arm slaps with different reach per limb, an Umbral-web tether that slowly drains your Ki at range if you stand still, and a full-body leap that crashes all four arms down simultaneously. Her second phase activates below 50% health, at which point she gains a multi-arm burst slam that radiates in four diagonal directions.

Strategy

Never stand at long range — the Ki drain tether activates at distance. Stay at mid-range and focus attack pressure on one arm at a time using a fast-weapon Mid-stance combo. Depleting a single arm's Ki bar causes it to go limp momentarily — exploit this with a full combo sequence. Throw Paralysis Shurikens at the body (not arms) during multi-arm slam recovery to paralyze the main body for a two or three-second free-punish window. Sprint sideways rather than dodging to avoid the four-directional Phase 2 burst, as the diagonal spread leaves clean gaps at the cardinal axes.

⚔️

Tokichiro (Final Form)

Weakness
Human-movement pattern exploitable by Spear Flourish stunlock; watch for counter-glow after blocked hits
Recommended Gear
Spear with Spear Flourish skill; Rejuvenation Talisman; Poison Shuriken for sustained damage during his buffs

Attack Patterns

Tokichiro's final confrontation is a two-stage human-class boss fight. His first stage uses standard samurai sword-and-buff combinations plus a Guardian Spirit that generates lightning. His second stage transitions when he partially Yokai-shifts, gaining a red aura, extended combo chains, and a parry-counter mechanic — if he blocks one of your attacks while glowing, he immediately retaliates with an unblockable counter strike.

Strategy

Use Spear Flourish (a mid-stance spear skill that chains into repeating hits) from the moment the fight begins, which locks Tokichiro in stagger recovery and denies him attack windows. Apply Poison Shurikens at the start of each phase to create passive damage ticking during his buff animations. In Phase 2, watch for the parry-counter glow carefully — when he blocks, immediately back away rather than chaining the next hit. Burst Counter his red-aura Yokai slam for a large Ki bar drain, then follow with Spear Flourish again to reassert stagger pressure.

⚔️

Otakemaru

Weakness
Continuous lateral movement avoids most homing attacks; each elemental phase has different safe positioning
Recommended Gear
Elemental Talisman set (Fire, Water, Lightning) to match his counter-element needs; Yokai Shift meter fully charged before the fight

Attack Patterns

Otakemaru is the final boss with three elemental phases. His first form uses fire attacks: flame sweeps, a fire-pillar eruption, and a charged fire-ground slam. His second form switches to ice: freezing breath, ice-shard volleys, and a frost-ground stomp that creates persistent ice patches. His third form uses lightning: a thunder-dash, lightning-bolt rain, and a full-body discharge AoE. Phase transitions are signaled by his body changing color and a brief roar animation.

Strategy

Maintain continuous sprint-circling around Otakemaru throughout the fight — almost all of his attacks track the player's last position rather than current position, making movement the primary defense. During fire phase, equip Water Talisman and attack his legs. During ice phase, equip Fire Talisman and attack his torso. During lightning phase, equip Water Talisman again and target his arm joints. Use Yokai Shift (fully charged beforehand) during the roar transition between Phase 2 and Phase 3 to deal massive burst damage while he is momentarily stationary. Bring five Elixirs rather than maximum Ochoko Cups for this fight — the extra healing sustains the aggressive circling strategy.
