Combat: The Kameo System Changes Everything

The Kameo Fighter system is the most significant mechanical addition since MK9's X-Ray attacks. Calling in a Kameo mid-combo extends damage and opens new pressure sequences; using one on wake-up provides a reliable reversal option; in neutral, Kameo zoning adds a second threat that opponents must track. The depth comes from pairing synergies: certain main roster fighters create dramatically stronger interactions with specific Kameos, and the meta evolution has been extensive since launch. Main roster movelists are cleaner than MK11 — every character has clear strengths and a defined gameplan.

Story Mode

NetherRealm's story modes have become a franchise hallmark, and MK1 delivers their best. The Liu Kang timeline reset lets familiar characters appear in reimagined roles — Smoke and Rain as Shirai Ryu ninja partners, Kenshi mentoring Johnny Cage — that feel fresh. The cinematics are among the best in the genre, and the final chapter delivers satisfying payoffs for series veterans who have followed the lore for decades.

An excellent fighting game that rewards both casual players (story mode, Invasions) and dedicated competitors (deep Kameo meta, ranked play).
