Ghost of Tsushima is Sucker Punch Productions' magnificent open-world action game set during the 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island. You play as Jin Sakai, a samurai torn between the honorable warrior code of his ancestors and the ruthless "ghost" tactics necessary to save his people. The result is one of PlayStation's most visually arresting games and one of the most respectful Western depictions of feudal Japanese culture ever committed to the medium.
Combat is built around stances — four fighting styles adapted to different enemy types. The Stone Stance destroys shields, Water Stance counters swordsmen, Wind Stance breaks spear attacks, and Moon Stance crushes heavy opponents. Switching between stances mid-combat to counter incoming enemy types creates a satisfying tactical layer beneath the fluid, cinematic swordplay. The standoff mechanic — facing enemies at dawn for a single-strike duel — is one of gaming's great set-pieces.
The Director's Cut adds the Iki Island expansion — a substantial new story involving Jin's traumatic past, new enemies, and additional traversal tools. The PC port (2024) features uncapped frame rate, ultra-wide support, and exceptional technical polish. The Legends co-op mode adds four-player raid content with roguelite structure that extends the experience well beyond the main campaign.
Four combat stances counter specific enemy archetypes. Reading incoming enemies and switching stances mid-fight is the game's core tactical skill.
A black-and-white film grain mode with Japanese audio that makes the entire game feel like a classic Akira Kurosawa film. Genuinely transformative.
Kunai, smoke bombs, sticky bombs, and the bow let Jin fight as a stealthy "ghost" rather than an honorable samurai. Both approaches are fully viable.
Four-player online co-op mode with story missions, survival, and raids. Completely separate from the main campaign with its own progression.
