How to Beat the Ice Titan with a Carcharodontosaurus in ARK: Survival Ascended

You do not need an army to beat the Ice Titan. Raconin's video does it with one Carcharodontosaurus, a good saddle, flak armor and Medical Brews. This guide walks through his fight in order, then adds the preparation and fallback plans a three-minute video cannot fit.

Why a Carcharodontosaurus works against the Ice Titan

The Ice Titan is a large, slow-turning boss, and the fight rewards a creature that hits hard and can keep hitting. The Carcharodontosaurus (usually shortened to Carcha) is built for exactly that. According to the official ASA wiki, it gains a stacking buff called Bloodrage every time it lands a killing blow: each stack adds 1.75% melee damage, stacks cap at 100, and a full stack is described as a 175% increase to damage and healing rate. Enemies with more base health give more stacks per kill. It also gets a short Killing Frenzy buff that raises movement speed and grants stun immunity.

The wiki also lists the Carcharodontosaurus among the recommended tames for the Ice Titan, alongside the Mek, Yutyrannus, Giganotosaurus, Rex and Managarmr. Raconin's choice is therefore a sound one, and the interesting part of his video is how little else he brings.

What the video shows. Raconin fights the Ice Titan without building any Bloodrage stacks first. The stacks are an optional extra that makes the fight easier, and we cover how to farm them below.

What to bring

Raconin's list is short. Here it is, with the reason behind each item so you can adapt it to your own character and server.

ItemRaconin's recommendationWhy it matters
CarcharodontosaurusAround 40 points in melee damage, full imprintMelee damage is the stat that does the work in this fight. Imprint bonuses apply when the player who imprinted the creature rides it, so ride your own imprint.
SaddleA good oneThe saddle is your Carcha's armor. The Carcha saddle unlocks at level 96 per the wiki, so plan the engram early.
ArmorA full set of flakYou are the one who gets hit when the Ice Titan's attacks land near you, and flak is the cheap, replaceable option.
Medical BrewsPlentyHealing is how you survive the cold damage from the freezing attack.
Second playerA good ideaA direct hit from the Ice Titan can do serious damage. A second player splits attention and gives you a safety net.

One more preparation point: the Carcha in this fight has to survive as well as hit. Raconin stresses watching the Carcha's health and adjusting if it falls too quickly. A Carcha with a little health invested alongside melee damage gives you more room for mistakes than a pure glass cannon, and that is a judgment call worth making before the fight rather than during it.

Summoning the Ice Titan

On Extinction, the Ice Titan's arena is the Snow Dome in the north-east of the map, and the fight is started from the Ice Titan Terminal after you provide the tribute. The wiki's listed tribute is one Artifact of the Void, 100 Corrupt Hearts, 10 Spinosaurus Sails and 10 Therizinosaur Claws. That page covers the Ice Titan across ARK versions and is thin on Ascended-specific detail, so treat the numbers as a starting point and read what your terminal asks for. Gather everything before you travel, because the tribute is the slowest part of the whole project.

Once the Ice Titan is summoned, the video's advice is simple: the fight starts, and from that moment positioning is everything.

The fight, step by step

This is the sequence Raconin follows. The whole fight is built on one rhythm: move in, bite, move out.

  1. Get behind the Ice Titan and stay there. Raconin calls this the most important thing in the fight. Standing behind the boss makes its attacks harder to land on you.
  2. Move forward and bite. Close the distance with your Carcha and land your attack.
  3. Move backward immediately. Do not stand still after the bite. Retreat, then repeat the forward-bite-back loop.
  4. Never stay in one spot for long. Keep watching the Ice Titan's movements and react to them so you avoid taking damage you do not have to.
  5. When it jumps, back off and wait. A jump is your cue to move backward and let it land before you attack again. The wiki notes that the jump is hard to avoid because of its stomp area, which is why backing away beats trying to attack through it.
  6. Handle the freeze. When the Ice Titan freezes you, you take a lot of cold damage. Watch your health and use Medical Brews early. Do not wait for your health to become critical.
  7. Keep an eye on the Carcha too. If its health drops quickly, change your approach instead of continuing to attack recklessly.

What the attacks are, in numbers

Raconin describes the behaviour; the wiki gives the numbers. These figures are listed on the Ice Titan page, which mostly reflects the base fight and not necessarily today's ASA balance, so use them to understand relative danger, not as exact guarantees.

AttackListed on the wikiWhat to do
Ice breathFreezes survivors and tames in place; leaves them vulnerable to follow-up attacksHeal early. Frozen creatures take 50% more damage from the Ice Titan's attacks.
Icy shot500 damage plus freezingKeep moving behind it and out of its line.
Ground slamUp to 3,875 damageThis is why you do not stand in front of it.
Foot stomp3,100 damageStay at its back and rear legs only long enough to bite.
JumpHard to avoid because of the stomp areaRetreat and wait for it to land.
Icy auraStarts when its health reaches halfExpect colder conditions in the second half of the fight.

The wiki lists the Ice Titan's base health as 350,000. That is a long fight for any single Carcha, which is exactly why the forward-bite-retreat loop matters: you are not trying to out-tank the boss, you are trying to take almost no damage while your damage output stays steady.

Optional: build Bloodrage stacks first

Raconin deliberately skipped this in the video, but he points out how to make the fight easier. Before you start, kill some wild creatures with your Carcha. Every kill builds stacks, and stacks mean more damage and more healing as you fight. Then travel to the Ice Titan and use the same strategy.

  • Bigger targets give more. The wiki says enemies with higher base health grant more stacks per kill, so a handful of large creatures is better than many tiny ones.
  • Stacks decay. Bloodrage degrades slowly, and then faster if you stop killing for a long time. Do your farming close to the summon rather than far away.
  • Know what a full stack means. At 100 stacks the buff reaches the 175% figure the wiki lists. You do not need to reach it, but even a partial stack changes the pace of the fight.
  • Use the roar for a partner. The Carcha's roar turns its stacks into an Incited buff for nearby allies (capped at 55 seconds for 100 stacks, per the wiki), which is a useful trick when a second player rides a damage dealer next to you.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Attacking from the front. The video's single most repeated point is to stay behind the boss. Every front-facing exchange costs health you cannot always heal back.
  • Chasing damage during a jump. If the Ice Titan is airborne, an extra bite is not worth a stomp. Back up first.
  • Healing too late. A freeze followed by a hit is how people die with Medical Brews still in their inventory. Heal when you are comfortably above danger, as Raconin advises.
  • Ignoring your Carcha's health. Look at it between every cycle. If it is falling fast, the answer is better positioning, not more aggression.
  • Arriving under-imprinted. If your Carcha is not imprinted, your numbers will be lower than the video's. Compensate with stacks and a second player.

Playing it safer, or with a different setup

If you are not confident, Raconin's own fallback is twofold: bring a second player, and build some stacks first. Beyond that, the wiki's recommended tame list is a good set of alternatives, including the Giganotosaurus, Rex, Yutyrannus, Mek and Managarmr. Whatever you choose, the principles carry over: damage from behind, retreat after each exchange, and never ignore healing.

What you get for winning

The wiki lists the Ice Titan as a guaranteed special-loot kill. Its unlocks include the Tek Rifle, Tek Chestpiece, Tek Helmet, Tek Forcefield, Tek Replicator and the Tapejara Tek Saddle, and its loot includes Mek Saddle blueprints. The Tek Rifle and the Tek Replicator are the two that change how your base runs, so decide in advance who in your tribe gets to take them.

If this boss is part of a larger plan, the other Raconin guide on this site covers a fight with a very different shape: Alpha Rockwell on Aberration, which is a gear-and-consumables fight on foot rather than a one-creature fight. And if you do not have a Carcha, the Rex taming guide covers a common alternative heavy hitter.

Frequently asked questions

Raconin does it in the video with a single Carcha that has about 40 points in melee damage, a good saddle and a full imprint, plus flak armor and Medical Brews. He recommends a second player for safety but shows the fight with a lone Carcha as the main fighter.
No. Raconin fights without any stacks in the video. He suggests killing wild creatures first as an optional way to make the fight easier, because stacks increase both damage and healing.
On Extinction. The wiki lists the arena as the Snow Dome in the north-east of the map, with the fight started from the Ice Titan Terminal after you provide the tribute.
Heal. Raconin warns that the freezing attack lets you take a lot of cold damage, so watch your health and use Medical Brews before you reach a critical level, not after.
Behind the Ice Titan as much as possible. Move forward, bite, then retreat, and back away completely while it is jumping.
