🗺️ Main Story Walkthrough
Tick off each step as you go — your progress saves locally, no account needed.
You crash-land on an island with a limited survival kit containing a GPS Tracker, a Tarp, a lighter, and some basic food. Your first task is building a shelter before nightfall — place the Tarp as a lean-to over two sticks to create the simplest possible shelter with a fire in front of it. Cut trees with the small axe from the crash to gather logs and craft a proper log structure once you have enough materials. The GPS Locator in your inventory shows the locations of Kelvin (your NPC companion), Virginia (the three-armed mutant companion you will meet later), and three quest targets. Send Kelvin to gather logs or stones immediately — he is a highly efficient automated gatherer.
Kelvin is a mute soldier companion who communicates through written notes and follows instructions via a radial menu. He can gather logs, stones, fish, build fires, and follow you on patrol. His most powerful feature is the "Clear Area of Logs" and "Get me X logs" commands — leave him working at a tree cluster overnight and wake to dozens of logs. Virginia, the three-armed mutant woman, is befriended by repeatedly holding still when she approaches and not raising your weapons. Once befriended she can wear an outfit (she prefers specific clothing found in caves and bunkers), be equipped with two pistols or shotguns simultaneously, and will fight cannibals and mutants automatically. Virginia is arguably the most powerful combat ally in the game.
The Shovel is required to dig up the Maintenance Bunker entrance and access the game's critical mid-game areas. Obtaining it requires two prerequisite tools obtained from two separate caves. First, get the Rope Gun from the cave on the western coast (marked on GPS as a cave icon) — this cave requires fighting through Cannibals and contains the Rope Gun on a corpse deep inside. Second, get the Rebreather from the cave to the north (requires swimming through an underwater tunnel). With both tools, access the Maintenance Bunker where the Shovel is located in a storage room guarded by several Mutants.
Three keycards gate access to the game's bunker network and are acquired in a specific order. The Maintenance Keycard is found in the Maintenance Bunker (also where the Shovel is located) in a storage area. The VIP Keycard is inside a bunker on the southeastern side of the map, accessible through a cave entrance after using the Shovel to dig up the hatch. The Guest Keycard (the final one) is found deep in the Food and Dining Bunker on the northeast coast. Each bunker contains critical items: 3D Printer for advanced equipment, a guitar, food supplies, and story-critical documents that expand the lore of the island's corporate research history.
3D Printers are found in the underground bunkers and require Printer Resin (abundant in bunker storage rooms) to fabricate items. The three most important 3D-printable items are: the Flask (craft it immediately for a reusable water container), the Sled (fastest traversal down snowy mountain slopes), and the Tech Armor implant system. The Tech Armor uses Printer Resin to print individual armor plates that stack on top of your worn clothing for significant damage absorption. Craft a full set of Tech Armor before attempting the endgame cave or any group mutant encounter. The Golden Armor suit found in a specific bunker is the best armor in the game and requires the VIP Keycard to access.
Weapon progression moves from the Tactical Axe and Stun Baton (found in the helicopter crash inventory) through the Pistol, Shotgun, and Compound Bow found in various bunkers and caves, culminating in the Katana and the Knight V (railgun) as endgame weapons. The Katana is found in a snow cave on the western mountain range and is the fastest melee weapon in the game, capable of killing Mutants with 3–4 hits. The Shotgun is found in a cave on the northwest coast. The Knight V is located in the Residential Bunker and serves as the primary weapon for the final boss fight. Sticky Bombs (3D-printed) and the Molotov Cocktail are the best tools for large group mutant encounters at cave entrances.
The endgame is triggered by collecting all three keycards and using them to access the Food and Dining Bunker, then following the tunnel network to a large underground chamber containing a massive floating geometric structure. Equip the Golden Armor (found in a specific bunker accessible with the VIP Keycard) before descending into this final area — it provides the highest damage resistance in the game and makes the final boss encounter survivable. Bring Virginia equipped with two shotguns for the final encounter. Stock at least 20 Printer Resin for emergency Tech Armor plate repairs during the endgame sequences. The game has multiple endings depending on whether you choose to use the helicopter or the cube gateway to escape.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Mutant Twins (Virginia's Fathers)
Attack Patterns
The Mutant Twins are encountered in a large cave chamber and represent the game's first major boss-level encounter. These are two large, heavily mutated humanoids with elongated limbs who fight in coordinated tandem. Their attacks include a leaping pounce that covers significant distance, a dual-arm slam with a shockwave, and a charging tackle. They stagger each other when their attacks collide, creating brief openings. At approximately 40% health each, they become more aggressive and begin coordinating attacks so that one covers the other's recovery.
Strategy
Open the fight with a Molotov to isolate one twin in a fire zone while you focus the other with the Katana. The Katana's speed lets you hit twice before their recovery animation ends. Use the cave pillars to break line of sight from the second twin while fighting the first. Virginia will automatically engage the second twin with her pistols, dealing meaningful chip damage. Dodge the pounce attack by rolling diagonally at the last moment — dodging straight backward is insufficient for the hitbox. Kill one twin fully before turning to the second, as split damage across both prolongs the fight into their dangerous coordination phase.
Finger Mutant (Cave Guardian)
Attack Patterns
The Finger Mutant (also called the Sluggy by the community) is a large, pale quadrupedal creature encountered in several key caves including the Rope Gun cave and the Shovel cave. It is distinguished by its finger-like protrusions across its body and its four-limbed rapid scuttling movement. It attacks with rapid slashing swipes and a body-slam that has knockback. It is unusually fast for its size and can close distance across a cave chamber in under two seconds. Multiple Finger Mutants may be encountered simultaneously in the deeper bunker areas.
Strategy
Aim the flashlight at it as you enter — it briefly hesitates when the light hits its face, giving a 0.5–1 second attack window. The Shotgun at close range deals massive burst damage; fire twice to stagger it, then close for a follow-up hit. The Compound Bow with Bone Arrows at medium range is more ammo-efficient for solo explorers. Avoid fighting multiple Finger Mutants in the same corridor at once — retreat to a larger chamber to manage spacing. In the Shovel Maintenance Bunker, the Finger Mutant guarding the storage room can be bypassed entirely by rushing past it to the Shovel and sprinting out.
Demon Boss (Final Cave Entrance)
Attack Patterns
The final boss encounter in Sons of the Forest is a large demonic creature with multiple limbs encountered in the endgame underground facility. It attacks with sweeping limb strikes that cover a wide arc, a projectile attack fired from its chest that inflicts a poison-like status effect, and a charge that crosses the large arena room. It has a secondary phase where it splits into two smaller forms temporarily. Throughout the fight it periodically regenerates a portion of its health if left unpressured for more than 10 seconds during the split phase. The arena has scattered resource crates for ammo resupply.
Strategy
Fire a full charge from the Knight V at the opening of the fight for massive early damage. Virginia's dual shotguns provide consistent DPS throughout the fight — ensure she entered the area with full ammunition by keeping her armed throughout the late-game. During the split phase, focus both smaller forms with Sticky Bombs to prevent regeneration. The Golden Armor's superior damage resistance allows you to tank several hits while charging up the Knight V for subsequent shots. Use the terrain crates for ammo resupply between Knight V charges. The fight concludes a story sequence; after the boss is defeated, approach the cube to trigger the game's ending.
Cannibal Leader (Village Raids)
Attack Patterns
Cannibal Leaders are the elite human enemies that command raiding parties attacking your base. They are identifiable by their painted armor, bone decorations, and more aggressive melee behavior compared to regular cannibals. Leaders use a spear or a club and attack with a three-hit combo followed by a shield bash. They call nearby cannibals to assist if you do not kill them quickly. At night, Cannibal Leaders lead torch-bearing raiding parties that encircle your base before charging. They have roughly 3–4x the health of a standard cannibal.
Strategy
Prioritize the Leader at the start of a raid before the group spreads — a headshot from the Compound Bow deals instant kills on normal difficulty. During base raids at night, place your campfire near your base entrance to light the approach and break their torch advantage. Two Molotovs thrown into a grouped raiding party before they reach your walls will eliminate most of the standard cannibals, leaving the Leader isolated. Build log walls and spike traps around your base perimeter to channel raiders into kill zones before they reach you. Virginia armed with pistols will automatically engage and suppress the group while you target the Leader.
