Monster Hunter World begins with your arrival in the New World as part of the Fifth Fleet. Complete the opening assigned quests in the Ancient Forest, hunting Great Jagras and Kulu-Ya-Ku to unlock the full suite of weapon types at the workshop. Use these early hunts to settle on your primary weapon—the tutorial is generous but the window to experiment closes once the gear treadmill accelerates. Collect monster tracks during expedition free-roaming to level up Research on each monster, unlocking better investigation rewards.
The story shifts to the Wildspire Waste for hunts against Barroth and Jyuratodus, then escalates to the pivotal Anjanath assignment in the Ancient Forest. Anjanath is the first "wall" monster for new players: it has high aggression, a biting charge that one-shots unprepared hunters, and an expandable frill that signals its fire breath. After killing Anjanath, its Hide and Fang materials make one of the strongest early-game armor sets. Immediately craft the Anjanath Mail and Helm for their Attack Boost and Non-elemental Boost skills.
The Coral Highlands introduces flying wyverns at scale. Hunt Paolumu and Legiana, then face the Azure Rathalos assignment—a classic series icon that poisons with its talons and breathes fire from the air. Bring Flash Pods to ground Rathalos and Nullberries for poison. After Rathalos, the Research Commission unlocks the Elder's Recess expedition, marking the transition to the late Low Rank and the Elder Dragon story arc. Stock up on Max Potions and Mega Demondrug before proceeding to the Elder's Recess.
The Elder's Recess is a volcanic region where the Elder Dragon Nergigante is discovered feeding on other Elder Dragons. Investigate Nergigante tracks across multiple expeditions to trigger the assignment fight. Nergigante hits exceptionally hard; the Vitality Mantle from the Botanical Research Center is essential for surviving its Dive Bomb. After defeating Nergigante, the story splits into three parallel Elder Dragon assignments: Kushala Daora, Teostra, and Vaal Hazak, each in a different biome.
Kushala Daora in the Ancient Forest, Teostra in the Elder's Recess, and Vaal Hazak in the Rotten Vale must all be defeated to unlock High Rank and Hunter Rank 16. Each demands element-specific preparation: Kushala Daora requires high Water and Ice resistance for its wind-vortex attacks; Teostra demands Fire Resistance 3 and Effluvia Resistance for its Supernova; Vaal Hazak inflicts the Effluvial Decay debuff—equip Vaal Hazak Vitality armor or the Effluvia Resistance skill. Completing all three unlocks the penultimate story mission and the Confluence of Fates questline.
Zorah Magdaros, a colossal Elder Dragon the size of a mountain, is encountered in two siege-style assignments. In both, you board its back to destroy magma cores, then man cannons and the Dragonator to repel it from the Commission's barrier. Bring a Heavy or Light Bowgun for the core-destruction phase, and time the Dragonator to fire when Zorah Magdaros is fully centered. Defeating the second siege unlocks Hunter Rank 30 and the final story mission.
The true final boss quest "Land of Convergence" sends the player into a crystalline chamber beneath Elder's Recess to fight Xeno'jiiva, a newborn Elder Dragon of unknown origin powered by bio-energy. This is a lengthy multi-phase fight; bring your strongest Poison weapon and maximum Fire Resistance, as Xeno'jiiva's most dangerous attacks inflict Fireblight across the whole arena. Defeating Xeno'jiiva unlocks Hunter Rank 50 and the endgame Tempered Monster investigation grind.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Anjanath
Attack Patterns
Anjanath is an aggressive Brute Wyvern with an expandable nasal frill that signals a fire breath attack. It uses rapid jaw snaps, a leaping charge that knocks hunters prone, and a sustained fire beam when fully enraged. When its frill is fully extended, fire breath frequency increases significantly. It will charge relentlessly across the Ancient Forest canopy, sometimes swinging from vines.
Strategy
A Water element weapon makes this fight substantially faster. Aim for the legs and tail to trip Anjanath and create safe damage windows. Breaking the frill reduces fire-breath frequency. Earplugs level 3 or higher prevents the roar from interrupting your combos at critical moments. The Waterproof Mantle is not helpful here; equip the Vitality Mantle instead to survive accidental charge hits. Flash Pods can interrupt fire breath and ground it briefly for a free mounting opportunity.
Rathalos
Attack Patterns
Rathalos is the flagship Flying Wyvern, spending much of the fight airborne. It performs talon grabs that inflict Poison, a three-hit aerial fireball barrage, a spinning tail swipe when cornered, and a stomp-charge combo when grounded. When enraged it adds a relentless aerial pursuit pattern that makes staying under it very difficult.
Strategy
Flash Pods are mandatory to fight Rathalos efficiently—hit it while airborne to crash-land it and expose the head for a full combo. Dragon element weapons deal the most consistent damage. Prioritize breaking the wings to permanently reduce its airborne time; wing breaks are rewarded with extra carve slots. Bring Nullberries for the talon Poison and consider the Poison Mantle to turn its own ailment against it. Target the head when grounded and use the Great Sword's True Charged Slash or Hammer's Spinning Bludgeon for maximum head damage.
Nergigante
Attack Patterns
Nergigante is a relentless Elder Dragon that grows regenerating spikes across its wings, forelegs, head, and tail. Spikes begin white and soft (weak points), then harden to black (deflect attacks). Its Dive Bomb can one-shot hunters at full health. Other attacks include a charging shoulder slam, a spike-eruption from the ground beneath the hunter, and rapid multi-hit claw combos when enraged. When black spikes cover the body completely, it enters maximum aggression mode.
Strategy
Attack white spikes to break them and prevent them hardening; this is the primary skill check. The Vitality Mantle is nearly mandatory for absorbing the Dive Bomb. Thunder weapons exploit the 3-star weakness on the horns and forelegs. Use Flash Pods to interrupt the Dive Bomb windup or to ground it after an aerial charge. Earplugs 5 prevents its roar from wasting your damage window. Breaking the horns changes the Dive Bomb's hitbox, making it slightly safer to read. Bring Mega Demondrug and Armor Skin for a flat stat boost throughout the fight.
Vaal Hazak
Attack Patterns
Vaal Hazak is an Elder Dragon that inhabits the Rotten Vale and uses Effluvial Decay, a miasma that halves the hunter's maximum HP when buildup completes. Its attacks include a sweeping cadaverous breath beam, a long-range white-miasma burst from its chest ruff, and a tail slam that spreads effluvial gas. When enraged its body erupts with effluvial gas on contact with any attack, creating a constant area-of-effect hazard around it.
Strategy
Effluvia Resistance 3 or the Vaal Hazak Vitality armor set is the most important gear choice; without it, your maximum HP will quickly halve, making any hit life-threatening. Fire element weapons deal the highest damage. The chest ruff is the primary weakpoint; it takes significant damage from weapons that can arc under the body like Dual Blades or a Long Sword. Equip Miasma Resistance to negate the max-HP halving entirely. Bring 10 Max Potions and craft additional ones at the supply box. The cadaverous breath beam has a wide but slow sweep—roll toward Vaal Hazak rather than away to avoid it.
Teostra
Attack Patterns
Teostra is a lion-like Elder Dragon that emits a constantly building Powder Vortex around its body. When the powder reaches maximum charge, Teostra detonates a massive Supernova that instakills unprepared hunters. It also performs a running fire-breath sweep, a fast pounce with a fire burst, and a body press that scatters flame powder on the surrounding ground. When enraged it becomes permanently cloaked in flame, dealing fire damage on contact.
Strategy
Fire Resistance 3 is the minimum for safe Supernova survival; equip the Temporal Mantle to become briefly invulnerable when Supernova charges. Watch Teostra's body glow—when it turns intensely bright orange, Supernova is imminent: Sprint away or use the Temporal Mantle. Breaking the horns reduces its fire powder output significantly. Flash Pods interrupt fire powder charging. Water element weapons are most effective on the head and underbelly. Never stand directly in front of Teostra during the running fire-breath sweep; approach from the side toward the hind legs for safe melee engagement.
Kushala Daora
Attack Patterns
Kushala Daora is a metallic Elder Dragon that generates a permanent wind aura around its body, deflecting most projectiles and pushing hunters back from close range. It fires high-pressure wind tornadoes, performs a hovering wind vortex that pulls hunters in, and uses a dive-bomb wind slam. Its steel hide makes it resistant to most physical attacks at normal range. When enraged the wind aura intensifies, dealing chip damage on contact and increasing all tornado hitboxes.
Strategy
Elderseal weapons directly suppress Kushala Daora's wind aura for several seconds after a hit, allowing normal damage and projectile access. Without Elderseal, fight exclusively at melee range directly under the body where the wind aura is weakest. Thunder element weapons deal the highest raw damage. Shock Traps work on Kushala Daora and remove its flight capability for a complete phase of free damage. Never attack from ranged while the aura is active without Elderseal; arrows and bowgun shots are deflected entirely. Break the wings to reduce aerial time and the severity of wind vortex attacks.
Xeno''jiiva
Attack Patterns
Xeno'jiiva is the final boss, a newborn Elder Dragon of crystalline bio-energy. It fires sustained beam attacks from its chest and mouth, creates persistent energy-field pillars across the arena floor, and performs a full-screen shockwave at HP milestones. Its body glows with increasing intensity as it takes damage; at low HP it enters a supercharged mode with wider beams and faster movement. Its limbs and wings create additional beam sweep attacks when it rears up.
Strategy
Poison is uniquely effective against Xeno'jiiva; it takes triple-rate tick damage from Poison compared to most monsters. Apply Poison via weapon coatings or a Poison-element weapon, then re-apply immediately upon expiry. The front legs and head are the recommended attack targets in melee range. Fire Resistance 3 prevents instant carting from its beam attacks. The Temporal Mantle saves lives during the HP-milestone shockwaves that cannot be fully evaded through normal dodging. Bring 20 Mega Potions and 10 Max Potions; this is a lengthy fight with no quick-kill option. Use the supply box at the start of the quest to replenish consumables.
