The game opens with the expedition arriving at the Windward Plains to return the boy Nata to his homeland. Your first assignments involve hunting Guardian Doshaguma, a powerful pack-leader Fanged Beast that charges through attacks without flinching—circle wide and target its hindquarters. Unlock the full weapon tutorial by completing "Hot on Their Tails" against Quematrice, a Brute Wyvern vulnerable to Ice. After Quematrice falls, craft its armor set immediately as it provides Burst and Weakness Exploit skills that carry you comfortably into Chapter 2.
The Scarlet Forest region is unlocked mid-Chapter 1. Hunt the Congalala, then pursue the assignment "A Stage of Rose and Thorn" against Lala Barina, a pollen-scattering monster that inflicts Sleep—bring Nutrients or Mega Nutrients to counter the sleep buildup. After Lala Barina, the Balahara assignment introduces you to the underwater-adjacent river combat zone. Complete all Chapter 1 optional assignments before the story flag to unlock the Regional Map fast-travel points, reducing backtracking significantly in later chapters.
Chapter 2 sends you to the geothermal Oilwell Basin, where flammable gas vents alter monster behavior. Hunt Rompopolo, a Fanged Wyvern that uses venomous tail spines and superheated oil bursts. Rompopolo is weak to Ice; craft a high-damage Ice weapon from Quematrice or Balahara materials before this fight. The Capture Net mechanic is introduced here—capturing Endemic Life fills the Supply Cache with useful items at camp. After Rompopolo, the story moves into Iceshard Cliffs for the Chapter 2 finale.
Jin Dahaad is a massive Elder Dragon-adjacent Leviathan that battles across three distinct terrain phases in the frozen Iceshard Cliffs. It is weak to Fire and Thunder—switch to your Fire weapon here. Each phase Jin Dahaad transitions to a new zone; use the environment's hanging ice stalactites as natural flash-bomb substitutes by luring Jin Dahaad underneath them and shooting them down. After defeating Jin Dahaad, Chapter 3 unlocks along with High Rank assignment quests.
Chapter 3 focuses on Guardian-type variants of existing monsters, including a back-to-back encounter with Guardian Ebony Odogaron followed immediately by Xu Wu, an agile creature that attempts to recover the fallen Guardian's corpse. Xu Wu is weak to Fire. After clearing this paired hunt, the story centers on Zoh Shia, a Guardian monster that controls the Dragontorch artifact Nata needs to save his village. This is the climactic Low Rank boss—prepare with Dragon-element weapons and fire/thunder resistance gear.
Completing Chapter 3 and hunting Zoh Shia unlocks High Rank content and Chapters 4–6. Tempered Monsters—stronger variants with additional patterns—begin appearing in expeditions. Hunting Tempered Monsters drops Artian Materials required for the Artian Weapon tier, the highest base-power weapons in the game. Prioritize hunting Tempered Rey Dau and Tempered Uth Duna early in High Rank, as their Artian sets provide the best Thunder and Water Resistance armor for the endgame encounters.
Gore Magala, the flagship Elder Dragon of the expansion arc, arrives in Chapter 5 bringing the Frenzy Virus mechanic—a stacking debuff that reduces your max HP unless you deal enough damage to trigger Frenzy Overcomes, which temporarily boosts affinity. Equip Frenzy Resistance armor or the Frenzy-Override skill to mitigate this. After Gore Magala, a Frenzied Blangonga appears as an emergency encounter. Chapter 6 concludes with Arkveld, the White Wraith revealed as the true flagship monster of Wilds.
Arkveld is the ultimate story boss of Monster Hunter Wilds. It wields chain-blade limbs that absorb energy and inflicts Dragonblight. The fight has multiple phases tied to Arkveld's chain energy states—when chains glow, focus attacks to trigger an explosion and topple Arkveld for a massive damage window. Arkveld is weak to Dragon element. Craft the best Dragon weapon available from Gore Magala or Zoh Shia materials, equip Blight Resistance and bring Nulberries, then fight methodically—chain management is the core skill check of this encounter.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Guardian Doshaguma
Attack Patterns
Guardian Doshaguma is an armored Fanged Beast that leads a pack of smaller Doshaguma. It charges without flinching through weak hits, performs spinning body-slam attacks, and occasionally calls pack members to charge in formation. When enraged, it releases a shockwave ground-pound that staggers nearby hunters. Its Guardian armor plating makes the head and shoulders harder to damage until the armor is broken.
Strategy
Break the Guardian armor on its forelegs and chest first—use Clutch Claw wound attacks or continuous heavy strikes to the legs. Thunder weapons cut through the base hide effectively. During pack charges, stay mobile and use Evade Extender to clear the rush. The best opening for major damage is after a full charge where it overshoots and stumbles—target the head with a mounted finisher or a fully charged Great Sword combo. Bring Shock Traps, as Doshaguma is trappable and will stay ensnared for a full damage phase.
Quematrice
Attack Patterns
Quematrice is a Brute Wyvern that breathes jets of superheated fire and uses its massive tail as a club. Its fire breath creates persistent burning zones on the ground. When enraged it charges its chest cavity with heat, causing all of its body attacks to inflict Fireblight. It will also perform a running tackle while dragging its jaw along the ground—this hit-box extends further than it appears.
Strategy
Equip a high-quality Ice element weapon—any ice weapon significantly above your current tier will make this fight straightforward. Wear the Fireproof Mantle to eliminate Fireblight risk during the enraged window. Attack the head and tail—breaking the tail severs it and eliminates the tail-club attack entirely. Avoid standing directly behind Quematrice for extended periods due to the wide sweep hitbox. Use Flash Pods when it begins a sustained fire-breath sequence to interrupt the attack and create a free damage window.
Zoh Shia
Attack Patterns
Zoh Shia is the Chapter 3 flagship and fights in three progressive phases. In its initial crystalline form it fires large crystal projectile clusters that explode on contact, spawns crystal pillars across the arena, and performs sweeping wing strikes that cover half the arena. Mid-fight it partially discards its crystal coat, gaining Thunder-element attacks. In the final phase it reveals its true form, adding lightning-bolt ceiling summons, restricted arena mobility from crystal spikes, and a massive final AoE crystal detonation at low HP.
Strategy
Break the crystal armor on the wings and head as early as possible to expose Zoh Shia's Dragon-weak flesh underneath. In the first phase, use the crystal pillars as cover from the AoE blasts rather than trying to outrun them. Bring Nulberries to address both Fireblight and Thunderblight which are inflicted in the second and third phases respectively. In the final phase, stay at maximum arena distance when Zoh Shia's HP drops below 20% to avoid the terminal crystal detonation. Hammer, Charge Blade, and Switch Axe are ideal for breaking crystal armor quickly.
Rey Dau
Attack Patterns
Rey Dau is a Flying Wyvern and the apex predator of the Windward Plains. It dives repeatedly from the air with a thunder-charged claw rake, fires concentrated lightning bolts from its beak, and at full fury performs a sustained electrical discharge that covers a wide ground area. When enraged its wingbeats generate persistent electrical fields near its body.
Strategy
Flash Pods are the most effective tool in this fight—hitting Rey Dau during a dive causes it to crash and remain grounded for 10–15 seconds of free damage. Target the head to reduce its lightning-bolt output. Equip Thunder Resistance 3 or higher to prevent one-shots from the electrical discharge. A Water element Long Sword or Dual Blades provides both strong damage and the mobility to evade its aerial patterns. When it lands briefly to rest, immediately wound its head via Clutch Claw for a permanent damage bonus to that hitzone.
Uth Duna
Attack Patterns
Uth Duna is a Leviathan that cloaks itself in a water veil reducing incoming damage. It performs high-speed water jet sweeps, a full-body dive that creates enormous splash zones, and a sinuous serpentine charge along the ground. Once its water veil is depleted it becomes faster and more aggressive, adding snap bites and a rapid coiling body-slam combo.
Strategy
The water veil must be stripped before Thunder damage reaches peak efficiency—hit the body repeatedly to drain it or aim for the exposed neck. Once the veil drops Uth Duna gains agility, so switch to Shock Trap placement at a choke point in the Scarlet Forest to steal a free damage phase. Nulberries immediately remove Waterblight, which cripples stamina recovery and makes dodging ineffective. Dual Blades with a Thunder build maximize sustained damage against the serpentine body profile.
Nu Udra
Attack Patterns
Nu Udra is a multi-headed Leviathan covered in flammable oil. It launches oil jets that coat the ground, then ignites itself to add a fire element to all subsequent attacks including a sweeping flamethrower breath from its heads, falling flaming rock launches, and a full-body slam that creates an oil-fire shockwave. Before igniting, its attacks are purely physical; afterward they all deal fire damage and inflict Fireblight.
Strategy
Target the individual tentacle heads, which are Nu Udra's primary weakpoints and can be damaged from mid-range. During the oil phase (before ignition), avoid standing in oil pools—use Barrel Bombs placed in oil to trigger extra explosions and deal bonus damage. Equip Fire Resistance 3 or the Fireproof Mantle for the ignited phase to eliminate Fireblight risk. Water element weapons deal consistent damage throughout all phases. The heads are small targets; weapons with good reach like the Switch Axe or Long Sword maintain ideal spacing.
Arkveld (White Wraith)
Attack Patterns
Arkveld is Monster Hunter Wilds's flagship Elder Dragon. It wields four chain-blade limbs that absorb environmental energy and inflict Dragonblight. Key attacks include wide chain-sweep combos that cover 180 degrees, a chain-anchor slam that pulls hunters toward Arkveld, a sustained energy beam from the chest, and a dramatic aerial dive when chains are fully charged. When both chain sets are charged (glowing), Arkveld enters a supercharged state with higher damage and faster combos.
Strategy
The central mechanic is chain management: attack glowing chains repeatedly until they overload and explode, guaranteed to topple Arkveld and open its head for 10–15 seconds of free attacks. During the uncharged window Arkveld is easier to damage and less lethal. Dragon element weapons deal 25–30% more damage to the head and tail compared to neutral. Flash Pods interrupt its aerial dive and ground it. Break the chains early in the fight to permanently reduce the power of Arkveld's most dangerous combos. Maintain Blight Resistance to avoid Dragonblight, which negates your weapon's element and cripples your DPS window.
