God of War: Ragnarok begins with Kratos and Atreus living in hiding during Fimbulwinter. The first major quest sends them to Svartalfheim, realm of the Dwarves, to find Tyr. Svartalfheim is an industrial water-gate puzzle realm; learn to use the Leviathan Axe's Frost Awaken ability to freeze water wheels and redirect flow through metal channels. Complete the Aurvangar Wetlands region fully before advancing the story to pick up the Nornir Chest nearby that contains a Horn of Blood Mead—it permanently increases Kratos's Rage Meter. Brok and Sindri's shop opens here; spend early Hacksilver on Shield upgrades before weapons.
The Alfheim story quest tasks Kratos with uncovering Odin's hidden operations involving the Light of Alfheim. The realm has a day-night cycle mechanic: certain paths and Nornir Chest puzzles only open during the correct light phase. Equip Kratos with the Sunset Armor set before entering, as Light Elves inflict rapid burn damage that stacks quickly without burn resistance. Complete the "In Service of Asgard" favor questline for Raeb the dwarf before leaving Alfheim; it rewards the Chaos Flame upgrade material for the Blades of Chaos. The Alfheim Lake of Nine equivalent area hides three Odin Ravens required for the Ravenkeeper favor rewards.
Vanaheim is the largest explorable realm in Ragnarok and contains the most optional content. The story requires finding the imprisoned Tyr, god of war, in the swamp region called The Jungle. Use the Celestial Altar in the center of the realm to trigger Night cycles—many favor NPCs and all "Crater" zone content only unlocks at night. Complete the first three Crater Favors before proceeding with the main quest to unlock Freya as a fully functional combat companion with her Realm Shift ability. The Nidhogg boss encounter concludes the Vanaheim story arc and rewards the first of three Runic Attack upgrades.
Mid-game splits the perspective: Atreus travels alone to Jotunheim and then to Asgard itself under a disguise. The Atreus sections play differently from Kratos—Atreus uses ranged combat exclusively and relies on Companion Summons for close-range threats. Solve the Giant rune puzzles in Jotunheim by matching the Jotnar Shrine symbols seen earlier in the game. In Asgard, complete every available exploration task since this is the only time this realm is accessible in the main game. Failing to grab the Asgard Artifacts now means missing them permanently, as Asgard is not revisitable in post-game.
After Atreus returns and the full scope of Odin's plan is revealed, the story shifts into rally-the-realms mode. Travel to each of the six major realms and complete the assigned favor quests for each realm's leader: the Vanir in Vanaheim, the Elves in Alfheim, the Dwarves in Svartalfheim, and so on. This phase is the game's most free-form section and the best time to complete Berserker Gravestones, Draugr Holes, and the Crater content in Vanaheim. Ensure Kratos's armor set is at least level 7 before entering the final story chapter—the Steinbjorn set (crafted from Slumber Stones obtained from Stonemen bosses) is the best available pre-endgame option.
The final story chapter is a large-scale assault on Asgard with multiple playable segments alternating between Kratos, Atreus, Freya, and brief sections with Brok. Each character segment contains narrative payoffs for quests completed in earlier chapters. As Kratos, the assault involves fighting through Asgard's outer walls with the Draupnir Spear and surviving the Asgardian army. Ensure you have spent all Hacksilver and available upgrade materials at Brok and Sindri's shop before the rally scene—it is the last unrestricted shop access before the true final boss sequence.
The Odin confrontation occupies the final two hours of the game and includes story beats involving the Mask of Creation and the true revelation of Odin's plans for the cycle of Ragnarok. Multiple companions are present for the final boss sequence, providing combat support and story dialogue. There is a mid-fight save checkpoint between the first and second Odin phases. After the story concludes, a post-game open world phase unlocks; Kratos retains all gear and abilities. The "Favor of the Gods" achievement requires completing all realm side quests—begin immediately post-game if any were skipped.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Bjorn the Bear (Across the Realms)
Attack Patterns
Bjorn is a recurring elite bear enemy type encountered in Vanaheim and Midgard. Its primary attacks are a full-body charge covering two-thirds of the arena, a rearing roar that buffs its own attack power for thirty seconds, and a four-hit claw combo ending in a ground slam. When Bjorn reaches 30% HP it activates Bloodlust—all attacks gain Bleed stacks and its movement speed increases by roughly 40%. The charge attack during Bloodlust is nearly impossible to dodge without Guardian Shield Parry timing.
Strategy
Open with a Leviathan Axe heavy throw to the head to interrupt the Roar buff before it completes. The Guardian Shield Parry is essential for the charge attack: hold L1 at the last possible moment for a perfect parry that staggers Bjorn fully. After the perfect parry, a Shield Bash follow-up with R1 deals heavy bonus damage. During Bloodlust, prioritize distance and axe throws over melee. Runic Attack Hilt of Skofnung deals rapid Frost buildup; two full casts freeze Bjorn solid, and a frozen Bjorn cannot use the charge. Freya's Seidr arrows apply Slow status on the target area—use them to make the Bloodlust phase manageable without perfect parrying.
Nidhogg
Attack Patterns
Nidhogg is the world-serpent wyrm of Vanaheim, fought in a multi-phase encounter in the corrupted swamp area. She attacks with Corruption Tendrils—large roping limb attacks that have a Corrupted energy burst at impact dealing Draugr-type status damage—and a Body Slam that creates a wide shockwave. Her Corruption Barrier surrounds her central core with a green shield that blocks all direct damage; only Atreus's Light Arrows break it. In the second phase she adds aerial dive-bomb attacks and a multi-tendril Corruption Web covering the whole arena.
Strategy
The fight rhythm is: Atreus fires Light Arrows to break Corruption Barrier, Kratos immediately uses Blades of Chaos Burn Runic Attack on the exposed core, then defends while Barrier rebuilds. During the window when a tendril is temporarily pinned to the ground after a failed slam, use Hyperion Slam with the Blades for maximum burn DPS. The Corruption Web in phase two requires rolling diagonally through the gaps in the web rather than back-rolling straight. Equipping Raging Inferno bracers doubles the burn duration from Chaos Flame hits, extending each damage window from four to roughly eight seconds. Never use the Leviathan Axe—Frost attacks actually heal Nidhogg due to her Corruption affinity partially resisting elemental cold.
Heimdall
Attack Patterns
Heimdall is the game's most unique boss mechanically because he cannot be hit by any weapon except the Draupnir Spear—his Bifrost precognition ability causes him to auto-dodge all other attacks. His offensive moveset uses Bifrost energy: a ranged Bifrost Blast beam, a Bifrost Field melee combo that applies Bifrost status on every hit (causing additional damage when the meter fills), and a signature move called Gleipnir Grab, where he catches any thrown weapon and hurls it back for doubled damage. In phase two he cloaks in Bifrost aura making him difficult to track visually.
Strategy
Equip and use only the Draupnir Spear from the first second of the fight. Heavy R2 spear strikes build his Stagger gauge; stagger opens him to full-combo damage. The Gleipnir Grab can only grab thrown weapons—never throw the Draupnir Spear at Heimdall directly. Instead, use the R2 charge-stab to detonate planted spears, which deals AoE damage he cannot auto-dodge. Atreus's Sonic Arrows interrupt Heimdall's Bifrost Blast mid-charge, preventing the most dangerous ranged attack. The Rond of Purification accessory clears the Bifrost status meter when it reaches half-full, preventing the bonus damage burst. Phase two is ended fastest by spam-detonating planted spear chains during any stagger window.
Odin (Final Boss)
Attack Patterns
Odin fights in three phases. Phase one uses rapid staff combos, a teleporting Seidr blast that covers a quarter of the arena, and Bind of Fate—an unblockable grab followed by a Bifrost explosion dealing 70% HP damage. Phase two adds Soul Rend, which temporarily fragments Kratos's soul, disabling his weapons and forcing dodge-only movement for eight seconds. Phase three introduces All-Father's Wrath, a multi-stage sustained attack combining all his abilities in sequence culminating in an arena-wide blast.
Strategy
Phase one is the most learnable: the staff combo always ends with an overhand slam that has a perfect parry window. Landing three consecutive parries fills Odin's Stagger bar for a free Runic Attack burst; use Leviathan's Wrath of the Frost Ancient Runic Attack here for the highest damage. Phase two Soul Rend is announced by a unique purple glyph appearing at Kratos's feet—roll away from the glyph immediately and use the eight-second dodge window to study Odin's position for a counter. Phase three All-Father's Wrath requires Freya to use Realm Shift at the correct moment—this is a story-scripted event, not a player-input action. Between the Realm Shift, dump all remaining Runic Attack cooldowns and Spartan Rage. Multiple companions are present and attack passively; their attacks do not deal boss-significant damage but do interrupt Odin's recovery animations, providing extra attack windows.
Gna, the Queen of the Valkyries (Optional)
Attack Patterns
Gna is the hardest optional boss in the game and requires a full mastery of all combat mechanics. Her moveset includes: Wrath of the Valkyrie—a multi-hit wing-blade combo with no gap between strikes; Sanctum Seidr, a homing energy orb that pursues Kratos until destroyed or dodged 12 times; Divine Shield, an unbreakable block requiring Kratos to break her guard with a Shield Slam before she lowers it; and Ruinous Smite, an unblockable wing-slam that one-shots at below 60% HP. She also has an undodgeable grab at melee range when Kratos is stationary for more than two seconds.
Strategy
Gna has no formal weakness to Frost or Fire; consistent Bifrost buildup from the Gugnir armor's innate Bifrost stat is the most reliable extra damage source. The Divine Shield must be broken with a Shield Slam (L1+R1 simultaneously); do this every time she raises her wings in the defensive stance. Sanctum Seidr is best dealt with by weaving Runic Attacks during the twelve dodges rather than pure defense—each dodge buys a quarter-second window for a ranged axe throw. Ruinous Smite's telegraph is Gna pulling both wings back simultaneously—block with L1 then immediately roll backward. This fight is considered a gear check; players who have not completed all the Berserker Gravestone and Draugr Hole rewards will find themselves underleveled. Attempt Gna only after Kratos is fully leveled to level 9 in all gear slots.
Berserker King Hrolf Kraki (Optional)
Attack Patterns
Hrolf Kraki is fought at Midgard's King's Grave after collecting all twelve Berserker Gravestones and completing each individual Berserker fight. He is a combination boss that uses abilities from every Berserker encountered: Stonewall Kolbjorn's boulder armor, Hardrefill's Poison cloud spam, Fraekni the Zealous's Bleed combo, and Hvitserk's Bifrost explosion. He cycles through these movesets in semi-random order and the fight has no phases in the traditional sense—his HP pool is simply enormous.
Strategy
This fight demands stamina management over a long engagement. Prioritize Guardian Shield perfect parries to stagger Hrolf during window transitions between his movesets. The Runic Attack cycling strategy—casting one Runic Attack on cooldown at all times to deal consistent chip damage—is more reliable than burst strategies given the fight's length. The Stonewall boulder armor must be broken with heavy R2 attacks; only then can normal Runic Attacks connect fully. Keep Spartan Rage in Fury mode (L3+R3 simultaneously while Rage is full) for emergency heal during the Bifrost explosion sequence. Completing this fight rewards a Trophy and the unique Hilt of Skofnung upgrade, one of the most powerful Runic Attack starters in the game.
