God of War: Ragnarök Review
Our Verdict
Ragnarök improves on its predecessor in every dimension — a masterclass in sequel design that delivers one of gaming's most emotionally resonant stories.
Combat: Evolved and Deep
The addition of the Draupnir Spear adds a third full combat dimension — a throwing and recall weapon with explosive stagger capabilities. Chaining all three weapons using their elemental interactions (freeze-shatter with the Axe, ignite with the Blades, stagger with the Spear) creates complex combo opportunities that reward mastery. The shield parry mechanic is the core high-skill option — landing precise parries staggers enemies and recharges Rage faster.
Gameplay and Progression
Skill trees for all three weapons plus Atreus provide steady progression across the runtime. Armor crafting, enchantments, and attachments allow meaningful customization. The open-world elements in Vanaheim and Alfheim add substantial optional content without diluting the focused main path. Favours (side quests) are among gaming's best-written — each a complete short story.
Story and World
Ragnarök's story is its greatest achievement. Kratos's evolution as a father, Atreus's growing independence, and the reinterpretation of Norse mythology — Odin, Thor, Freya, Tyr — as complex characters rather than archetypes makes this the most ambitious video game narrative of its generation. The final act is devastating in the best possible way.
Graphics and Performance
The PS5 version is a technical showcase — 60fps with near-photorealistic character models, dynamic lighting, and extraordinary environment design across nine distinct realms. The PC port (2024) adds higher resolution options and frame rate unlocking. One of the best-looking games available on any platform.
Verdict
God of War: Ragnarök is essential. A perfect sequel that honors everything its predecessor built while adding meaningful depth in every area.
