Combat: Deflect First, Ask Questions Later

Wo Long's combat centers on the Spirit Gauge and the deflect system. Passive blocking drains Spirit quickly; perfect deflects maintain it and damage enemy Spirit. Successful deflects of enemy Fatal Strikes (telegraphed by a glowing red flash) completely break enemy Spirit, opening them to a Fatal Strike counterattack for massive damage. The rhythm of attack, build Spirit, read the Fatal Strike, deflect, capitalize defines every fight. It is fast and demanding — closer to Sekiro than Nioh 2 in its emphasis on aggressive play.

Morale and Exploration

Each mission has Battle Flags (main checkpoints) and Marking Flags (hidden secondary flags) that raise your Morale Rank. Higher Morale improves Spirit recovery and combat capability. The system incentivizes thorough exploration before boss encounters and creates a satisfying sense of earned strength. Dying to non-player enemies loses Morale; dying to bosses (while frustrating) is less punishing.

Wizardry and Build Variety

The Five Phases Wizardry system provides meaningful elemental depth. Each school counters an opposing element: Metal counters Wood, Water counters Fire, etc. Checking enemy elemental types and preparing counter Wizardry dramatically improves fight efficiency. The build variety doesn't match Nioh 2's depth, but the combination of Martial Arts, Wizardry spells, and weapon types provides several meaningfully distinct character expressions.

Verdict

Wo Long rewards aggressive, rhythm-based play with a unique and satisfying loop. Recommended for Souls-like veterans seeking a faster, more deflect-focused experience.
