Our Verdict

Hades II in Early Access is already a masterpiece — Melinoë is a brilliant protagonist, the expanded weapon roster creates extraordinary build diversity, and Supergiant's narrative craft is unmatched in the genre.

Combat: Six Weapons, Infinite Variety

Each of Hades II's six weapons is a complete combat system. The Sister Blades reward aggressive close-range play with fast attacks and a teleport special. The Witch's Staff balances melee and ranged attack ranges with a charged beam Omega Special. The Moonstone Axe is a slow heavy weapon with a devastating charged overhead. The Argent Skull fires explosive shots with a bounce-bomb special. Umbral Flames hover around Melinoë applying DOT damage. Revaal's Skull summons a companion spirit. Mastering each weapon's rhythms — and which Boon archetypes pair with each — creates 50+ hours of build exploration.

The Boon system's expansion over Hades I brings deeper synergy potential. Apollo's Solar Ring creates a burning halo that interacts with Artemis's arrow crits and Poseidon's knockback. Cross-god Duo Boons emerge from specific combination — finding them builds the run's identity. The Hex ability (charged by Omega Specials, spent for a powerful effect) adds a cooldown layer that creates moment-to-moment tactical decisions absent from the original.

Narrative and Characters

Supergiant's storytelling engine — characters commenting on run events, death situations, relationship milestones, and world state — is expanded with a 22-character voiced cast including Melinoë's mentor Hecate, the Furies in new roles, and a dozen new Olympian interactions. Melinoë's relationship with her brother Zagreus (referenced throughout) and her complex attitude toward her divine parentage are developed with the psychological nuance Supergiant brings to all their protagonists. Chronos as a villain is the franchise's most sophisticated antagonist.

Progression: Arcana Cards and Ashes

The Arcana Card system is a strategic improvement over the Mirror of Night. Cards are unlocked using Ashes (a cross-run resource earned from completing runs and prophecies). The tarot visual design communicates the card effects intuitively. Unlocking cards in the right order — prioritizing survivability (extra death defiances, health) before offense — shapes how quickly you can reach the second biome surface routes.

Verdict

Hades II is the new standard for roguelite design. Even in Early Access, it surpasses the first game in every dimension and belongs in the conversation for best game of 2024.
