Marathon is Bungie’s sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV in 2893, where the UESC Marathon colony has gone dark. You play as a Runner — a cybernetically enhanced mercenary — dropped into dangerous zones to scavenge valuable loot, complete contracts, and extract alive. Every run begins with a loadout selection and ends either with a successful extraction (keeping everything you found) or death (losing your carried gear). The core tension is the risk-versus-reward calculation on every decision: push deeper for better loot or extract now with what you have. Unlike traditional shooters, Marathon has no respawns mid-run; death is permanent for that session. Learn this loop first before worrying about advanced mechanics.
Marathon launches with six Runner shells, each offering a distinct tactical foundation. Locus is the Destroyer: a frontline tank with a Riot Barricade energy shield and homing Search-and-Destroy rockets, suited to aggressive pushes. Blackbird is the Recon specialist: Echo Pulse marks nearby enemies through walls, and a deployable Tracker Drone explodes to overheat targets. Void is the Assassin: active camouflage and smoke screens enable stealth approaches and ambushes. Glitch is the Vandal: a disruptive, fast-moving shell built for pressure and flanking. A support-oriented Medic shell (Lifeline) and a loot-focused mobile shell (Thief, with grappling hooks and remote drones) round out the roster. Each Runner’s abilities can be further modified through cybernetic implants and core system upgrades unlocked via progression.
Marathon launches with three playable zones and one endgame area. Perimeter is the most beginner-friendly zone, set on the colony’s outer edges with more safe corridors and opportunities for stealth play — ideal for learning the extraction flow without constant PvP pressure. Dire Marsh is a larger, more open six-crew battlefield centered on an Anomaly — an alien force emerging from the ground — that creates dynamic environmental hazards mid-run. Outpost is the smallest map but the most vertically complex, built around a UESC security installation called the Pinwheel with active countermeasures, weather hazards, and tight sightlines. A fourth zone, the UESC Marathon ship itself, is planned as a post-launch addition. Each zone has unique loot tiers, key-locked vaults, and AI security density.
Your loadout in Marathon consists of your Runner shell, two weapon slots, body implants, and core system upgrades. Weapons range from close-range submachine guns and shotguns to precision rifles and heavy weapons found in the field. Gear found during a run can be equipped on the fly from your inventory — upgrading mid-match is a key skill. Higher-tier loot is found deeper in maps, behind key-locked doors, or on defeated UESC CMDR enemies. Extracted gear is banked to your Vault between runs and can be brought in as starting equipment on future drops, raising your baseline power. Losing a run means losing whatever gear you carried in — manage risk by not deploying your best items until you have backup copies or sufficient skill. Faction Armory vendors sell gear between runs using currency earned from contracts and extractions.
Marathon’s six factions — CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, Arachne, and Sekiguchi Genetics — each offer contract tracks that define your season progression. Completing faction contracts earns XP toward faction rank, unlocking Runner shell upgrades, expanded Vault storage, more powerful starting loadout options, and exclusive trades at the Armory. Contracts range from extraction quotas (extract a certain number of times) to specific PvP kills, item acquisition, and zone-specific objectives. Balancing contracts across multiple factions is important — some faction rewards are mutually exclusive, so choosing where to invest early shapes your mid-season power curve. Season 1 launched with all six factions active; new seasons add map updates and faction storyline content.
Rival Runner squads are the primary threat in Marathon. Squads can be one to three players depending on the game mode. Sound discipline matters enormously — footsteps, gunfire, and ability activations are audible at range and broadcast your position. Void’s camouflage enables ambushes from concealed angles; Blackbird’s Echo Pulse can reveal cloaked enemies, countering stealth plays. When engaging a squad, focus fire on one target at a time rather than spreading damage — a dead Runner cannot contribute to a fight. Downed Runners can be revived by squadmates within a short window, so securing kills quickly before a revive occurs is essential. Cornering an enemy squad near an extraction point is a high-value strategy — force them to fight or flee and loot their gear if they are eliminated.
UESC AI security forces patrol all three zones and escalate in threat if they detect you. Basic UESC Recruits are manageable alone, but engaging them creates noise that attracts other Runners. Shielded Assault Troopers require sustained fire to break their shields before dealing effective damage. Ghost-variant UESC units use an invisibility cloak and strike without warning — listen for their audio cue and pre-fire corners in high-security areas. Grenadier units lob grenades from range and force you out of cover. CMDR (Commander) variants of Scout, Grenadier, and Assault classes function as mini-bosses carrying rare loot — they have hardened armor, unique abilities, and are worth engaging deliberately for their drops. Native fauna including Ticks (swarming insects) and Birds create additional environmental hazards. UESC engagement is always a liability in contested zones because the noise attracts PvP attention.
The extraction decision is the highest-stakes moment in every Marathon run. Extraction points are fixed and known locations, making them natural PvP ambush sites — rival Runners frequently camp extraction zones waiting for loaded squads to walk in. Always scout an extraction point with Blackbird’s Echo Pulse or Void’s camouflage before committing to the extraction animation. If your Vault is nearly full or you are carrying rare Tier 3 loot, extracting early is almost always the correct call. On early runs with minimal gear, pushing deeper for better loot before extracting is justified. Banking a strong Vault allows you to enter future runs with higher-tier starting equipment, compounding your advantage over time. Successful extraction with high-value loot also drives faction contract progress faster than any other activity in the game.
⚔️ Boss Guides
Rival Runner Squads (Primary PvP Threat)
Threat Profile
Rival Runner squads of up to three players are the most dangerous and unpredictable threat in Marathon. Unlike AI enemies, rival Runners adapt, use cover, call abilities, and loot your gear if they eliminate you. Organized squads coordinate Runner abilities — a Locus holding a chokepoint with Riot Barricade while Blackbird spots and Void flanks is a formidable combination that can collapse a disorganized opposing squad in seconds. Third-party fights (where two squads are already engaged and you attack both) are one of the highest-value opportunities in the game but require precise timing.
Counter-Strategy
Avoid even engagements: always seek to create a numbers or positioning advantage before shooting. Use Blackbird’s Echo Pulse to confirm squad count and positions before engaging. Separate enemy squads from their Vault loot by forcing them to fight away from their current position. In a direct fight, focus all fire on one Runner to create an immediate numbers advantage, then address the revive attempt before pivoting to the second target. If outgunned, disengage and reset rather than committing to a losing fight — there is no penalty for retreating.
High-Tier Loot Vaults (Contested Zone Threat)
Threat Profile
High-tier loot vaults on Dire Marsh and Outpost are the most contested locations in each zone. They require specific keys to open, are located in areas with heavy UESC security presence, and are well-known PvP hotspots because every squad wants what is inside. The UESC security density around vault areas ensures that any firefight with robots immediately broadcasts your location through noise. Multiple squads frequently converge on vault locations simultaneously, turning the extraction into a three-way fight.
Counter-Strategy
Acquire vault keys from CMDR-class UESC drops or the faction Armory before committing to a vault run. Scout the vault entrance with Blackbird Echo Pulse to check for waiting squads before exposing yourself. Clear UESC security silently using suppressed weapons or melee to avoid generating noise. Have a designated carrier Runner who goes directly for vault loot while the rest of the squad holds perimeter. Once the vault is open, prioritize the highest-tier items and extract immediately rather than loitering — other squads will be rotating toward the noise of your UESC engagement.
UESC CMDR Enemies (Elite AI Mini-Bosses)
Threat Profile
CMDR (Commander) variants of UESC Scout, Grenadier, and Assault units function as elite mini-bosses carrying rare high-tier loot. CMDR Scouts have hardened skin and long-range precision rifles but emit a blast attack when approached at close range. CMDR Grenadiers throw grenades in rapid sequence and deny entire areas of cover. CMDR Assaults carry energy shields and heavy weapons, requiring sustained fire to break the shield before any body damage registers. All CMDR units have significantly more health than standard UESC enemies and will not retreat or surrender.
Counter-Strategy
Isolate CMDR targets before engaging — pulling them away from their patrol group prevents additional enemies from joining the fight. Against CMDR Assaults, flank laterally to shoot around or behind the shield rather than attempting to break it from the front. Against CMDR Scouts, close distance rapidly using Glitch’s speed or Void’s camouflage to negate their range advantage before they trigger the blast attack. The rare loot drop from a CMDR kill is worth the investment, but the engagement noise will attract rival Runners — extract or reposition immediately after the kill.
Environmental Hazards and the Anomaly (Dire Marsh)
Threat Profile
Dire Marsh is defined by the Anomaly, an alien force emerging from the ground that creates dynamic environmental danger throughout the run. The Anomaly generates hazard zones that shift position over the course of a match, dealing sustained damage to Runners caught inside them. Weather hazards on the Outpost map reduce visibility and affect thermal scope effectiveness. Native fauna including swarming Tick clusters and Birds create additional distractions at inopportune moments, potentially breaking stealth and revealing your position to rival squads. These environmental threats compound the pressure of PvP engagements by reducing safe ground to operate from.
Counter-Strategy
Learn the Anomaly hazard cycle timing on Dire Marsh by observing the visual and audio cues before its expansion — the ground glows and ambient audio shifts before a new hazard zone activates. Equip status-resistance body implants when running Dire Marsh to reduce the damage tick from Anomaly exposure. On Outpost, use weather visibility reduction deliberately to conceal your movement from rival Runners while navigating toward objectives. Tick swarms can be cleared quickly with a single grenade; Birds are best ignored unless they are actively alerting nearby UESC patrols.
Extraction Point Ambush (The Most Dangerous Moment)
Threat Profile
Extraction points are fixed map locations known to all players, making them the single most dangerous moment in any Marathon run. Rival Runners frequently preposition at extraction zones waiting for squads loaded with loot to walk into the extraction animation — which roots you in place briefly — making you an easy elimination. The extraction point ambush is an established high-percentage strategy because it requires minimal effort from the ambushing squad and catches targets at their most vulnerable. Multiple squads may contest a single extraction simultaneously, creating chaotic three-way engagements.
Counter-Strategy
Never approach an extraction point directly — always circle wide and observe from a covered angle first. Use Blackbird’s Echo Pulse to sweep the extraction zone before committing; if enemies are marked, fall back and route to an alternate extraction point on the map. Void’s camouflage can enable a cloaked sprint to the extraction beacon, but active ability use may be detectable by Blackbird counters. If your squad is eliminating an ambush squad at the extraction point, have one Runner begin the extraction animation immediately while the others finish the fight — do not wait for a clean situation that may never arrive.
